We recognize this statement is late. For that, we are sorry. We let our hope of “perfecting” the right statement stop us. This silence is, of course, part of the problem. We acknowledge the current situation toward Black communities concerning police violence and global anti-Blackness. As an organization, we denounce anti-Black violence in all its forms. . Our four nonprofit social enterprises, @cafe180englewood, @goodturncycles, @housing180, and @shyft_mindfulness, operate under One Good Turn’s mission of honoring and dignifying the intrinsic value of every person. However, we recognize that when it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we have work to do. Intent is not enough. . It’s our overwhelming desire for our spaces to not just be safe places for Black people—but to also be spaces where our Black neighbors can experience joy. We have work to do. Desire is not enough. . We’re prepared to take a hard look at our organizational makeup, its policies, our hiring procedures, and more. Beginning this fall, we will be undergoing a comprehensive culture assessment with the Philadelphia-based consulting firm, @culturedenuf. They have agreed to walk alongside us during this marathon of unpacking how our whiteness informs our ability to serve our community. . In the meantime, we’re listening to the Black voices who generously offer their stories so we may do better. We are learning and becoming more aware of the Black community’s current state of emotions, recognizing the exhaustion, anger, grief, and trauma. We’re encouraging our staff to do the work—from reading lists to vendor selection to community organizing and more. We won’t remain silent any longer. . You will hear more from us on the steps we’re taking to ensure our nonprofits better serve Black communities moving forward. As One Good Turn’s executive director, I want to personally welcome your feedback. If you would like to continue this conversation or have any questions or comments please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Until then, we encourage everyone to pursue self care and live mindfully during this time with hopes for a better future for our world. ~ Sarah Lesyinski, Executive Director
