• LUTEAL PHASE GROUNDING TOE STRETCH

Do you often feel a bit ungrounded in your luteal phase? That time after you've ovulated where progesterone and estrogen levels are rising and fluctuating. You too? Yea, I get that sometimes too... but the one thing that keeps me level headed and rolling with the flow of hormones is my yoga practice.

Want to feel more grounded the next time you're in your luteal phase and feeling a bit out of step? Try this toe stretch by coming onto all fours on your hands and knees with your toes tucked so the toepads are pressing firmly into the mat, knees are together or hip width apart, sit the hips back to the heels and walk the hands back and up the thighs to rest, it's most likely going to be uncomfortable so lift your hips off your heels as you need to, keep your chest lifted and spine long. If you have short pinky toes, make sure to flick those under so the toe pad presses into the mat. Stay here for as long as you can taking deep grounding breaths from the crown of the head to the base of the spine and down through the feet. Imagine the breathing moving up and down the body and down into the earth beneath you. Long, deep, even, focused breaths up the spine to the crown of the head and down to the base of the spine, through the pelvis, down into the feet into the earth. You can lift the hips up if you need to then place them back down. Hands resting on the thighs or for more intensity taking the arms overhead and clenching/unclenching the fists to get the blood flowing through the arms as well. Work up to being in this posture for 3 minutes. Squeeze the heels together for a deeper stretch in the inner foot. End with child's pose pressing the tops of the feet into the mat, third eye (eyebrow center) resting on the mat.

This whole cycle-conscious yoga thing keeps me grounded in mind, body and spirit because I'm actively practicing awareness of where I'm at in my cycle with how I'm feeling on that particular day and then my yoga practice is inspired by those two things. Give it a try and let me know how it feels! ✌🏾&🖤.

  • FEELING OVERWHELMED? TRY THIS!

There’s 3 places in the body that humans tend to hold tension: shoulders, diaphragm and psoas. This little setup right here helps you to relax, breath and release all 3 of those places. A little neck traction, psoas release and full deep diaphragmatic and Durga breaths. I’ll post a video setup tomorrow!

This is my go to posture when I feel overwhelmed and need to put my big ass ego in check, which is hardly never because I’m an awesome ass Aries 🤣 I’m kidding but I’m not unfortunately. I still struggle with the “woman who does it all” syndrome, especially being a single black mom, I need to prove myself to myself because I have to be better and do better than I did last year. EGO! And while that big ass ego helps me to protect me from the world of people’s bullshit, that big ass ego also allows me to say yes to more than I can handle, because I can and will do all the things, and then I’m overwhelmed and struggling to keep up with all the things I said yes to.

So here I am, overwhelmed, screaming no, I can’t do it all, I don’t want to do it all anymore and humbling myself with my yoga straps and a chair. This is me saying NO to being overwhelmed, this is my yoga, this is my life.

Anyone else out there feeling overwhelmed at the moment? How are you coping? Are you resting and using your holy hell no?

  • STOP APOLOGIZING FOR PRIORITIZING YOUR OWN SELF-CARE

The amount of times I've heard women say, "I'm sorry, but I can't..." is way more than it should be. Why do women feel the need to apologize before giving their holy hell "no"? The way people respond to your "no" is not about you! You are entitled to say no when you don't want to do something. It is your birthright to object to anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or you don't agree with. This isn't about overcoming fears or facing your imposter syndrome, this is simple self-care and setting boundaries for yourself. You don't owe anyone an explanation and you damn sure don't need to apologize, before, during or after telling someone NO.

Apply these simple self-care tips in your daily life, every single day, in all situations... especially in yoga asana practice and in your reproductive health self-care. Women are the first ones to throw themselves under the bus to appease other people or to get shit done. Nah, that ain't the answer. It's an awareness practice to feel into your body, trust your gut and give your sacred yes or holy hell no.

Before you get into a yoga posture, ask yourself how you really feel about it. If coitus isn't feeling good, you can say no in your own way and end intercourse. Don't feel like going to that girls night out, say no thanks. Not in the mood to take on any new clients, don't. Don't want to engage on social media, disappear and go take care of yourself. The world isn't going to stop because you decided to take time out to care for yourself. And there's no need to apologize nor explain your absence when you reemerge from your sacred yes to yourself. This ends my TED Talk on self-care... ✌🏾&🖤.

  • HOW DO YOU EMBODY FERTILITY?

There are some things that are typically associated with fertility and being fertile... summer, bunnies, full moons, cervical mucous, estrogen, babies, sensuality, procreation, coitus. But what does it really mean to "be" fertile, to experience fertility and embody fertility?

One of the things I most associate with fertility is the power of creation. The more you become aware of the subtle and sometimes not so subtle shifts in your body throughout your menstrual cycle, the more you can embody what each of those phases represents. Sometimes I wonder if my awareness is trickfucking my mind into experiencing something or if it's actually what I'm feeling at the time, but I trust that it's authentic. Whatever the reasons, I fully embrace and embody what I'm feeling in the moment.

When estrogen rises and your fertile window opens, you might experience more energy, you might feel more sensual, s*xual, liberated, free, wet (estrogen influences cervical mucous production), expressive, expansive, creative and full. It's a time to celebrate and embrace your fertile body, not fear it... which is why charting your cycle is so important, so that you can avoid pregnancy when you want and get pregnant when you want.

My yoga practice definitely reflects each phase of my menstrual cycle and the hormonal shifts, peaks and dips that I experience. You will constantly hear me say yoga and body literacy are embodiment practices, because they are. #Inversions are just one expression of my experience of being fertile and approaching ovulation. Going upside down feels good, my uterus feels light, my body feels amazing, my energy levels match the energetics of inversions and I feel strong and capable.

How do you embody fertility? What is your experience of "being" fertile? ✌🏾&🖤.

  • STOP CHASING ORGASMS

Orgasms simply arrive, that is all... just kidding.

To elaborate a bit on this, people ask me about orgasms a lot, it makes sense since I'm a s*xual health educator and tantric yoga teacher, not neo-tantra 🙄... it's not the same. Anyway, there was a question about yesterday's Sufi Grind tutorial, someone messaged saying that she felt aroused while practicing pelvic rotations and she experienced sensations that she had not felt before. We had a conversation about her breath, her body, her thoughts and where she 'was' in the moment while she practicing. She finally realized that she completely surrendered to her breath, she surrendered to the movement and she let go of her thoughts, she wasn't searching for anything, she simply arrived and was present in the moment experiencing what arose for her. That's orgasmic and it has nothing and everything to do with s*xuality. Orgasms happen when you surrender to what is happening in the moment of now.

Dancing can be orgasmic, birth can be orgasmic, cleaning can be orgasmic, yoga can be orgasmic, s*x can be orgasmic, life can be orgasmic... anything and everything can be orgasmic if you allow it to be. That in essence of tantra, living in the moment of now, surrendering to what is and seeing the beauty in all things so that you can experience pleasure in all things in this crazy life.

Stop chasing orgasms but simply allow them to arrive. Be in the moment, stop resisting, accept, surrender, let your senses come alive, become more aware, of yourself and your surroundings. Yoga is an embodiment practice, body literacy is an embodiment practice... when you combine these two things, all types of orgasms begin to arrive. You begin to find pleasure in the little things in life and it is truly liberating. That is tantra, that is orgasmic. ✌🏾&🖤

  • WHY CERVICAL MUCOUS MATTERS MORE THAN BBT

Did you know that your cervical mucous is THE key marker of reproductive health and fertility? We call breastmilk liquid gold, so cervical mucous is like liquid palladium mixed with gold and silver. Even if you ovulate, if you're not producing cervical mucous then getting pregnant is pretty much impossible. Now for some of you out there who are trying to avoid pregnancy, that may sound like good news but it's not, because it means there is an imbalance somewhere in the body that is causing your cervix not to produce cervical mucous. So when women ask me if they just track their basal body temperature to chart their menstrual cycle cycle for birth control, the answer is no. BBT only confirms that ovulation has occurred, it can also tell you a little bit about your progesterone levels, but cervical mucous can do that too.

Cervical mucous nourishes sperm and provides a pathway on which sperm can travel up the uterus to the uterine tubes. Your cervical mucous lubricates your vagina for coitus, masturbation and creative play. But the most important thing is that the presence of cervical mucous means you have sufficient levels of estrogen. Now producing cervical mucous all the time could be a sign of estrogen dominance, but that's for a later discussion. Just know that cervical mucous, the most fluid kind, means your fertile and that is a good thing, regardless of your reproductive choices.

So even though it can be a pain in the ass to have snail trails in your yoga pants, that cervical mucous serves a purpose and it's a sign of health! Embrace your cervical mucous, get to know it, look at it, touch it, smell it (you might notice a different scent during different phases) and enjoy fantastic coitus with the knowledge and awareness that you're healthy. ✌🏾&🖤.

  • EMPOWERING YOUR NATURAL CYCLES

When you follow the natural rhythms of your cycle, you begin to notice subtle little changes in your body, your mood and your mindset. The time after menstruation can be one of two things, it's either a time where your ovaries are mostly inactive producing only low levels of hormones in what is called your early infertile days OR you move right into your fertile window with rising levels of estrogen.

With this knowledge you can better understand your hormonal shifts, your mood changes, your bodily changes, your energy levels so that you can adjust your yoga and meditation practice accordingly to support where you are in your menstrual cycle. You can think about your menstrual cycle in different ways, like the 4 seasons, the phases of the moon, fertile days and infertile days, but no matter how you slice it up, there are some very specific hormonal and energetic shifts that happen throughout the menstrual cycle.

The more you understand about your unique hormonal rhythms and menstrual cycle, the more empowered you become and you're more able to embody your yoga practice in tune with your menstrual cycle. You might also start to notice a change in your mindset toward your yoga practice when you start a cycle-conscious yoga practice. I see this a lot with my students who practice Ashtanga, Iyengar, Hatha and Kundalini on a regular basis... their practices become less rigid and more fluid. They no longer mind modifying or skipping a practice on those days when their hormone levels are shifting or dropping.

Right now I'm in my early infertile days, that means my hormone levels are low, my cervix is blocked by a thick mucous plug, my cervix is not producing cervical mucous (for me personally that means Sahara desert cooch) and I'm currently I'm infertile. This also means that my yoga asana practice is slow and chilled TF out with yummy hip freeing postures and short meditations since my mind is less focused. It feels amazing to listen in, know what's happening internally and make those modifications and adjustments to suit where I'm at. Hormones regulate everything and everything we do influences them, so educate yourself!

  • BE YOUR OWN DAMN REASON TO SMILE...

You can do all the yoga asana, meditation, breathwork, shoving crystals up your yoni, saging, tantra, masturbating while chanting Goddess mantras, lighting candles, taking sacred baths while smoking a joint and waving palo santo you want... if you aren't doing that deep internal work, facing your own demons, diving into your own darkness and working through your past traumas, then you'll always be searching outside of yourself for reasons to smile and experience joy. Dive deep into yourself and pull out the pieces of yourself that make you laugh, smile and joyful. It's hard work and a constant struggle, but you've got this.

People are constantly searching outside of themselves for reasons to smile and experience happiness. Become THE person that makes you smile. Create a life that brings you joy and happiness. Shine so damn bright that it brings a smile to your face... and then let that brightness radiate to the people around you. ✌🏾&🖤.

  • ANYTHING YOU CAN DO, I CAN DO BLEEDING 🙄.

Do you ever have that period day where you wake up and you had big plans for the day but your body and mind is like NOPE? Yea, me too.

I remember the first time I heard that jingle, “anything you can do, I can do bleeding”, I was a teenager and I thought it was the most empowering thing ever... but then I grew up and realized I didn’t want to do everything while I was bleeding. It gives this false narrative that you should just suck it up, ignore your body’s signals, forget the fact that you do have a uterus, ovaries and fluctuating hormones, simply do all the things without complaining, no matter how you feel. Well, I call BS.

This has nothing to do with period pain or PMS, your body is literally eliminating your endometrium lining. You take a break from what you’re doing when you pee and poop, so it makes sense to also take a break when you’re bleeding too.

When you sync with your menstrual cycle, you give yourself permission to say no, I don’t want to, not now, later, I’m not feeling it, I’d rather not, nope, not today, nah I’m good. You give yourself permission to rest, especially if you’re a woman of color, you’re expected to do everything... no queen, just rest if you want to.

It’s Cycle Day 2 and I woke up ready to record a podcast and some menstrual yoga videos AND do all the mom things, but when I rolled over and realized I felt like absolute shit. So instead of “doing”, I’m resting, relaxing and watching the miniest  play Overwatch because it is okay for me to do “nothing” today.  Give yourself permission.✌🏾&🖤
