Now is the time to apply dormant oil to your deciduous fruit trees. Apply dormant oils with a compressed air or pump sprayers. To prevent burning of tissue, water trees well before applying. Do not spray if cold north winds or rain is expected. A clear day with no breeze is best. Apply at temperatures between 40 and 70 degrees F. The temperature should remain higher than 50 degrees F for at least 24 hours so the oil can spread and cover all crevices and crooks of a tree. Apply dormant oils when all of the leaves have fallen in January and again in early February. Cover the entire tree with a layer of oil. Copper is a trace element that makes fruit sweet. Copper and sulfur in combination is used as a dormant spray or in the spring to control a variety of bacteria and fungi including leaf blight, shot hole and peach leaf curl. It must be applied before the fungi have infected a tree. 🌿

Blue Hydrangeas🌿 Aluminum is the element responsible for blue hues in hydrangea flowers, and when aluminum sulfate is applied around a shrub, it not only lowers the pH of the soil, but also makes aluminum more available to the plant. Aluminum-containing fertilizers will achieve the same effect while feeding your hydrangea. Start applying now to add hues of purple, blue and lavender to your garden!

Happy National Houseplant Day! If you haven’t jumped on the houseplant bandwagon, here’s a few of our favs that are easy to start with: 🌱 sanseveria (shown here): commonly known as “snake plant” or “mother-in-laws tongue”, sanseveria takes little water and tolerates low light. Grow almost anywhere out of direct sun. 🐍 🌱 Zamioculcas zamiifolia: aka, ZZ plant is much less fussy and more tolerant of poor treatment than most other houseplants. Place in natural light and don’t overwater! 🌱 pothos: Pothos is arguably the easiest of all houseplants to grow, even if you are a person who forgets to water your plants. This trailing vine has pointed, heart-shaped green leaves, sometimes variegated with white, yellow, or pale green. While pothos likes bright, indirect light it can thrive in areas that don’t get a lot of sunlight or have only fluorescent lighting. Which houseplant is your favorite?
