The Bird With the Crystal Plumage (1971): Dir. Dario Argento Still my favourite 'Giallo' classic on par with Bava's 'Blood and Black Lace' (1964). Argento weaves a wonderful whodunit tale of murder and mayhem with one of Ennio Morricone's most enduring and creative scores. It has such atmosphere and dark psychological undertones. Classic Giallo; classic Argento. An American writer, Sam Dalmas (Tony Musante), is living in Rome with his girlfriend, Julia (Suzy Kendall). Whilst visiting an art gallery, Sam witnesses an unsuccessful murder attempt by a mysterious figure. As the assailant is believed to be an infamous serial killer, Sam quickly becomes a key witness in the ongoing police investigation. After he begins searching for clues that may help him identify the killer, Sam discovers that he may be the next intended victim. Gosh, I live this film!! #thebirdwiththecrystalplumage #darioargento #enniomorricone #giallo #serialkiller #thriller #cinema #cultmoviereview #cultclassic #cultcinema #cinematography #whodunit #murder #knives #horror #italiancinema

From Dusk 'till Dawn (1996): Dir. Robert Rodriguez I chose this picture because if I had chosen one of Salma Hayek, I would just be staring at it all day. On the run from a bank robbery that left several police officers dead, Seth Gecko (George Clooney) and his paranoid, loose-cannon brother, Richard (Quentin Tarantino), hightail it to the Mexican border. Kidnapping preacher Jacob Fuller (Harvey Keitel) and his kids, the criminals sneak across the border in the family's RV and hole up in a topless bar run by Cheech Marin. Unfortunately, the bar also happens to be home base for a gang of vampires, and the brothers and their hostages have to fight their way out. Enter Tom Savini and Fred Williamson to kick some ass! #fromdusktilldawn #robertrodríguez #quentintarantino #harveykeitel #cheechmarin #salmahayek #cinema #horror #action #fredwilliamson #tomsavini #jullietlewis #filmgeek #cultcinema #cultmoviereview #vampires

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970): Jaromil Jireš This incredible surrealist, fantasy horror film from Czechoslovakia is truly visionary. It works in a similar way to how you may imagine Jan Švankmajer's work if translated into live action. Considered part of the Czechoslovak New Wave movement, the film portrays the heroine as living in a disorienting dream, cajoled by priests, vampires, and men and women alike. Valerie, a thirteen-year-old girl, lives with her grandmother after the death of her parents. She is harassed by a monster who stole the earrings given to her by her mother. Despite the films horror tinged nature, the symbolism is more about a girls sexual awakening. It is, as I see it, a fairy tale; deep, dark, mysterious and sodden with symbolism. #valerieandherweekofwonders #czechcinema #jaromiljires #cinematography #fairytale #horrorfilm #horror #cultmoviereview #cultcinema #film #surrealism #surreal #europeancinema #czech
