Just saw the documentary about Ms. Morrison and was aware that racism and sexism and misogyny in our society have conditioned my mind to doubt her genius; to look for her flaws. But every time I read or reread her or listen to her I find evidence of my own shallow understanding of things because of the breadth and depth of her artistry and insight. I’m so grateful for her work. There’s no work that I’ve used as an educator that has better or more artistically spoken to the hearts and minds of people. #tonimorrison

One of the most thought provoking and compelling shows I’ve seen in a museum. Incredible work by all the contributors. I was especially inspired by @lyleashtonharris and @glennligon. Thank you, @guggenheim for Implicit Tensions (July 24, 2019–January 5, 2020), which addresses Mapplethorpe’s complex legacy in the field of contemporary art. A focused selection of his photographs is on view alongside works by artists in the Guggenheim’s collection, including Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Lyle Ashton Harris, Glenn Ligon, Zanele Muholi, Catherine Opie, and Paul Mpagi Sepuya.
Sontag quoted in a Ann Demeester quote in an essay on Mika Rottenberg, whose work has stayed with me since seeing her show at @newmuseum.
Prompt: describe nature and objects that conflict with or highlight your character’s state of mind. #renzopiano #chateaulacoste #taizokuroda
“Mika Rottenberg: Easypieces,” 2019. Employing absurdist satire to address the critical issues of our time, Rottenberg creates videos and installations that offer subversive allegories for contemporary life. #mikarottenberg #newmuseum #subversive #allegories

I’m moved by Antoni Gaudí’s work and life story, especially the narrative around his equal love of nature and god. I’m not a religious person, but I was raised religious, and having survived it, I’m now grateful. Devotion is something I was taught to practice and recognize. As an artist, Gaudí also “failed.” Many of his projects weren’t fully realized, and many realized were criticized. Pictured here were his coffee cup and an initialed handkerchief. These objects along with the austerity of his bedroom indicate a quiet, devoted man. It’s compelling that he remained single his whole life. I want to learn more about him and his techniques. See what I might be able to bring to The Lab. #labinspiration #thelab_w_mcd #gaudi #parkguell
