THE KORA • "A musician...who played the one-string moro, met on the bank of the Gambia river a strange musician who played a twenty-one stringed instrument, and who expressed the wish to exchange it for the one stringed instrument because he liked its sound. As part of the bargain the stranger undertook to teach the Gambian to play the new instrument. It is said that they met daily at midday to practice at the river bank. Later the stranger-musician wanted to take his instrument back, but the Gambian musician refused. He over-powered him and took the Kora, the twenty-one stringed instrument, home. When he told his wife what had happened, she advised him to cover the instrument with his trousers when he went to sleep so that the stranger might not find it if he came 'in spirit' to recover his instrument." -Origin story of the kora, (Aning 1982, 164). • Since its origin, the kora has been constructed out of specific materials, gourds, wood, and sinew. The kora is an instrument tied closely to the cultures of West Africa. Found throughout modern-day Senegal, Mali, Gambia, and Guinea, the kora is deeply imbedded in Griot (Jali) culture and has been for hundreds of years. Harbouring deep roots as an instrument of storytelling and folklore in 16th century West Africa, the kora has been played by the same musical guilds since then; and today, the kora is played by many more diverse groups than in the past, a cultural framework that is quickly changing. • Taught kora by his grandfather, Yacouba Sissoko comes from a family line of Malian musicians dating back centuries. • Yacouba (@jacobdilli) and the magnificent kora will feature in the upcoming show 'Kabilla (Community)' on Tuesday 23 March. • This video is taken from a kora recital by Yacouba Sissoko on SAMA Presents, 2020. • • • #kora #kabilla #yacoubasissoko #samapresents #23arts #live #collective #livestream #musichistory #community

SAVANNAH HARRIS 🔥 • "She’s all over the jazz, avant-garde, and crossover scenes, playing gigs with everyone from stately ambassadors like Kenny Barron to the fierce hip-hop collective Standing on the Corner... Regardless of the genre she’s playing, Savannah Harris is “always going for grease,” as she puts it. It’s the perfect term to capture her aesthetic on the bandstand, because her playing feels slick and angular, with overt nods to bebop. Indeed, Harris’s playing often acts as the grease that helps the musical pieces onstage gel to form one powerful expressive unit." - Modern Drummer • Superstar drummer Savannah will join @jacobdilli , @chrispattishall and special guest, @vuyosotashe live at @thetriadnyc for their show, "Kabilla (Community)" on Tuesday 23 March. 🥁 • • • #drummer #superstar #23artslive #collective #livestream #savannahharris #community #kabilla #kora

YACOUBA SISSOKO • Yacouba Sissoko (@jacobdilli) was born in Kita, Mali, to a well-known djely family. The kora was the traditional instrument that djelys played. At the age of 9, Yacouba started learning the kora and the oral traditions associated with it from his grandfather until he moved to Bamako, Mali’s capital, to attend the National Institute of the Arts. Based in the capital, he caught the attention of the music world and began touring with noted international artists including Baaba Maal, Sekou (Bambino), Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, and Lauren Hill. • In the upcoming show, 'Kabilla (Community)' Yacouba looks at the relationship between folk music traditions on the African and North American continents. Kabilla will focus on the textural, rhythmic and harmonic connections between the two practices. • In this clip, Yacouba and his band, SIYA (Boubacar Diabate- djembe and Moussa "Malfa" Diabate) play Celebrate Brooklyn on 8 December 2017. • 'Kabilla (Community)' featuring @jacobdilli, @savvyknows and @chrispattishall will livestream on 23 March 2021. • Tickets -> 23arts.org • • • #23arts #live #livestream #kora #master #siya #kabilla #community #celebratebrooklyn #collective #welovelivemusic
