I am headed into this Good Friday with an entirely new perspective. This crazy covid-19 season has shown me how much I *thought* I was in control of... and how very little I actually control. I am grateful that God is in charge, that He is good, and that nothing at all is wasted. He will make all things new.
Every month we like to give a shout-out to someone who is inspiring us- this season it seems like there is no shortage of people doing amazing things. We are grateful to @repiconicapparel in Adel for promoting our small businesses in a great way. Red Fern was honored to receive a gift from their Encourage Adel T-shirt promotion and we have passed on the encouragement to other small businesses as well. Thank you for shopping small businesses, supporting small towns, and helping all of us get through this crazy time! ⠀ ⠀ #iowasmallbusiness #shopsmall #iowa #adeliowa #iowasmalltown #thinkadelfirst #encourageadel #youinspireme #covidkindness #spreadlove #spreadkindness
We all need some bright color these days, right?! 🧡⠀ For those of you in the Midwest, we're still planting for spring. So whatever you see if you go into a garden center (they're still open in Iowa, but practice social distancing!), not all those plants are good for spring pots. It SNOWED last week, remember? ⠀ ⠀ Some spring plants to look for: ⠀ -pansies⠀ -violas⠀ -nemesia⠀ -primrose⠀ -osteospermum⠀ -sweet alyssum⠀ -snapdragons⠀ -bulbs of course⠀ ⠀ Petunias, begonias, and any other plants you may see are not ready for prime time! They're what we need in about a month or so, but it's just too cold at night and even during the day for those summer bedding plants.⠀ ⠀ One last #protip: everything, even the ones I've listed, just came out of a greenhouse where things are nice and warm and toasty all the time. It is a good idea to harden off your new plants before you throw them out to the wolves - or a windy, 40-degree Iowa day. #iowagarden #iowa #redfernlandscapedesign #containergardening #containergarden #springcontainers #iowalandscapedesigner #springplanting #springflowers #flowersmakemehappy #adeliowa #midwest #iowahome #iowahomestaging #planttips #dsmusa
We have been having SO MUCH FUN with the flower championships! Of course nothing will replace basketball, but this has been a treat. It's the final match over on our stories: Peony vs. Hydrangea. Who's surprised??? Go to our stories to vote for your pick for the winner!!
Everywhere I look people are talking about how they need plants in their lives right now. Me too! I move all my house plants outside for the summer, but Not Yet here in Iowa. Here are some houseplant tips for you:⠀ 🌱⠀ Wait until low temps are at least 50 degrees before moving your plants out for their summer vacation. That’s mid-May for us. They LOVE it outside! In a shady spot, the light is perfect for most houseplants and the humidity will be exactly what they need after a winter indoors. ⠀ 🌱⠀ Spring is a good time to add fertilizer if needed- I do it when I move everyone outside. The inside life is hard on houseplants, especially when your heat is running, so don’t fertilize during winter. They just need to be dormant then. ⠀ 🌱⠀ Always make sure you have good drainage. Don’t plant in a container that doesn’t have drain holes. The plants will not thrive. Adding rocks to the bottom of a pot doesn’t help- it just stores the water up higher. If you have to use a pot with no holes, put your plants in a smaller plastic pot with drain holes and remove them to water. Plants sitting in standing water = dead roots. Some plants are more tolerant than others, but none prefer it. ⠀ 🌱 ⠀ Let me know other questions you have! We also posted a quick video on house plants in our Instastories earlier today. #houseplants #plantlady #plantmama #snakeplant #fiddleleaffig #iowagardener #iowagarden #iowahome #midwestliving #iowasmallbusiness #iowa #desmoines #515 #houseplantsofinstagram #iowalandscapedesigner #plantsmakemehappy #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantsmakemesmile
