  • In this edition of *Meet @ Black Oak*, we're featuring the Caring Kitchen Project @caring_kitchen, an organization working through North Coast Opportunities in Ukiah. The project's purpose is to get teens (and adults) into the kitchen, cooking food for cancer patients via the Cancer Resource Center. They partner with many local food producers including Parducci Wineries organic garden, school gardens, community gardens, Mariposa Market, and the Mendo Lake Food Hub, among others. . They meet at Black Oak for change of scenery, but it's also helpful seeing other community members (potential donors, kids, supporters) who they might not see otherwise. They also experience fewer work interruptions and feel less pressure when meeting outside the office. And of course, the yummy coffee drinks. Tarney's favorite drink is the Lover's Lane Latte, Teal loves the Cafe Borgia, and April's favorite is the Chai Latte. . This group has been gathering at our cafe once a week for the last three years to offer feedback and support for their various novel-writing projects. They find that discussing & explaining their works in front of others helps make sense of their writing projects. They sometimes read their works to each other, get to know each others characters, help keep things on track story-wise. . They choose Black Oak because they love the comfort, the combination of anonymity and feeling of community, plus it felt right to meet at a coffee house, keeping with the tradition of thinkers, writers, beatniks among others who've used cafes as meeting places. . Among other things, she's the Project Manager for the Fire Recovery Fund and teaches an online history course through Mendocino College. All of her work can be done remotely, so she makes Black Oak her go-to workplace. She has an office at home but finds that with all the distractions she encounters there, she's able to focus and get more work done at the cafe. She also loves running into people and making connections with folks in the community she might otherwise never make if she worked from home. . She's been coming to the cafe to get coffee and socialize since her teen years back when it was the Coffee Critic, and she loves it even more now. Her favorite Black Oak drink is the London Fog, which is a delightful combination of English Breakfast tea, steamed milk, and a dash of vanilla. .
