For this week's Professor Profile, we look at Associate Professor Deborah Panzer-Kilmnick: "I have been teaching at Nassau since 1998 (as an adjunct) and full-time since 2008. My areas of expertise/courses taught include Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communications, Persuasive Speaking, Nonverbal Communication and Effective Listening. I was very attracted to the diversity at NCC--the life experiences that enrich the classroom at Nassau are unmatched. I have taught and advised many students who have just graduated from high school and are figuring out their career goals, to others who are raising a family and coming back for a degree, and everything in between. Additionally, I was drawn to Nassau Community College due to the student-centered approach. Outside of the classroom, one of my favorite experiences at NCC has been serving as the Chair of the Student Activities Committee and the valedictorian sub-committee and coaching the valedictorian for the past ten years. Being on the search committee for the valedictorian has been such a rewarding experience. As a committee, we interview an elite pool of candidates for the valedictorian every April. For this week's Professor Profile, we take a look at Professor Diana Milillo-Portugal, Psychology: "I joined NCC in 2006. I instantly felt like I was coming home to a big family, and have genuinely loved my time here ever since. My journey in psychology has taken some twists and turns. From my days at Stony Brook, I pursued a double major in psychology and women’s studies – and continued that path through my PhD at the University of Connecticut. Over the years, I taught, mentored students, engaged in campus activism, and most recently went back to school again for a counseling degree to pursue another one of my dreams – becoming a therapist. I bring these new life experiences in mental health into each one of my classes. Although I absolutely love being in a room (virtual or face-to-face) with students, talking about psychology and life, I am most proud of the work I’ve done as the co-advisor to the Psychology Club over the years. Professor Christina Rau has taught English at Nassau Community College for over a decade. We are so happy to profile her today! "I’m a poet, so anything with words is my specialty. I teach a Creative Writing and Poetry workshop, where we basically play games all semester (it’s work, though — fun and challenging all at once). The Lit classes I teach are Modern American Poetry and Autobiographical Literature. I’ve had so many great experiences at NCC. At the end of last semester some of my students did a happy dance with me for getting through a semester via Zoom. I’ve always wanted to teach here at NCC as a way to give back to the community. I’m Long Island born and raised, so this College is an extension of my home. Education should be accessible to everyone and community colleges help to provide that education.
