• New 2020-2021 School Calendar - www.gvisd.org/calendar

The board approved a revised calendar this morning for the 2020 -2021 school year. The calendar moves the start date back three weeks to August 26th for students and August 17th for staff. It will include face to face and online instruction.

In the spring the board approved a calendar that had three weeks built in throughout to use if needed. It started on August 5th for students with teachers starting on July 27th.

The new calendar is only a week later than we traditionally start and will allow everyone more time to prepare and make decisions for the upcoming school year.

UIL is scheduled to release information concerning extracurricular guidance sometime this week.

Attached is a revised calendar for the 2020 - 2021 school year . We met with the administration, two separate groups of teachers and a group of parents on Zoom over the past couple of weeks to develop the calendar.
You will notice that we took three weeks out of the previous calendar and added two of those weeks to the beginning of school and one at the end. It includes two possible weeks for Thanksgiving, three possible weeks for Christmas and two possible weeks at Spring Break.
The extra weeks off will allow us to make up time missed during the year if we have to shut down for an extended period of time. It also will allow us to have as much face to face time as possible if we have to be out. Starting two weeks early will allow us to get a good idea of where the kids are academically and what their needs are going forward. You can think of the blue weeks on the calendar as bad weather days.
Normally we would not make this big of a change at this time of year, but with missing nine weeks and the strong possibility of missing days throughout the year, we feel like it is what is best for our kids. As you have probably seen on the news, both the Governor and Commissioner are encouraging schools to adjust their calendar. If we didn't change and had to be out, the days missed would have to be made up at the end of the year in June.

  • Today we activated student email accounts for Junior High and High School students. These student email accounts will be used to help with student/teacher communication. The students can access their new email accounts by going to www.gvisd.org/classlink and choose the gmail icon. They will login to the classlink page using their current student google account provided by the district. If your student has issues with logging in you can send an email to tech@gvisd.org for a password reset. The student email accounts are restricted to only emails within the district.
They can also use their classlink page to access other school resources that are available to them.
