  • #tbt to last Friday afternoon, when students, faculty, and staff from all three divisions gathered online for Collegiate’s first ever virtual fall convocation. The Rev. Michael S. Bos began with an invocation, followed by Head of School David Lourie’s remarks. “In times of uncertainty, when rough seas are swirling about me, I often seek safe harbor in my love for history. Reading about the past gives me perspective and teaches lessons from those who have encountered similar challenges,” he said. He went on to discuss “The Splendid and the Vile”, Erik Larsen’s chronicle of Winston Churchill and England during the Blitz in World War II. “[Churchill’s] approach was optimism in the face of sobering facts,” said Mr. Lourie. “I highlight this today because, as the Dutchmen of Collegiate School, that is how we must enter this extraordinary school year: determined to make it a great one despite the sacrifices it will require of all of us. In Unity, There is Strength.” . The student performance was by Elijah W. ’21, who played “Meditation”, from Thais, composed by Jules Massenet. . Lucas G. ’21 introduced the featured convocation speaker, Director of College Guidance Ali Bhanji. Mr. Bhanji gave an honest and powerful speech. “The last few months have cast me into a vortex of thought about beginnings, about origins—sometimes of a more existential sort,” he said. “And it is in the spirit of the openness, that Mr. Vidale, our Director of Institutional Equity and Belonging encouraged of faculty this summer, that I take seriously my opening assignment in the hope that sharing personal reflections will add to making Collegiate a place where all students and all members of our community feel like they can belong, and not have to work so hard to do so because of their religion, their race, their sexuality or gender, a disability, or their national origin.” . Convocation concluded with a recording of the “Alma Mater” performed by the UnDutchables in spring 2020. #collegiatenyc #collegiateonline
