• Mather High School is excited to announce the hiring of Tyler Leighton as head boys basketball coach. Leighton, 33, rose as the clear choice to lead the basketball program. Leighton’s character, personality, knowledge, and experience encompasses everything Mather Athletics stands for. He is the right fit for our culture. Coach Leighton is coming from Senn High School, where he was the varsity assistant the past two seasons. During the 2019-2020 season, Senn finished 17-6 and went undefeated at 10-0 in the Blue North Division and won the conference tournament. In the 2018-2019 season, Senn finished second in the Blue North. “I am excited for the opportunity to lead the Mather Boys Basketball Program. I’m also grateful for Mr. Lecomte, Ms. Lyons, and Mr. Auffant who believed in me enough to give me a chance. It is a dream come true to be Chicago Public League Head Coach. I know I have a lot of hard work ahead, but I’m looking forward to getting started.” Previously, Coach Leighton was athletic director and head coach at DRW College Prep in the North Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago. Leighton has also spent time as graduate assistant at Valparaiso University under former Coach Bryce Drew and as a skills development coach at Impact Basketball in Sarasota, FL. As a player, Leighton played professionally in China and Spain. Collegiately, Leighton was an NAIA All-American and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of Year under Dennis Parks at Indiana University South Bend. As a prep player at Jimtown High School in Elkhart, IN, Leighton was a top 100 player in the state and his team won the county’s only state championship in 2004. Leighton is a Physical Education Teacher at Helen C. Peirce Elementary School and lives in the Edgewater neighborhood with his wife Brittney, daughter Jordyn, and son Titan.
