Happy Monday everyone 😁We'd like to take a moment to wish Cassie Drake a 🎉Happy🎊Birthday🎂 from all #sdsujdp friends and colleagues, we hope you have a wonderful birthday! Growing up she wanted to be a teacher since she started babysitting at the age of 12. Her first job at 16 was in an after school program. From there, she assisted in pre-K classrooms, ran preK/K-8 summer camp programs and tutored until she passed the CBEST and began substitute teaching. It was during her credential program that she realized her love for the field of education would someday call her out of the K-8 classroom into teacher education. (She was VERY dismayed by the watered down, 'heroes, histories and holidays' approach to Multicultural Ed.) Being a teacher is an act of love, creativity and self expression which she enjoys combining with a passion for learning, developmental theory and critical race theory. She can't imagine committing her life to any other field! 👩🏫 Her favorite birthday memories have been during her JDP years. Some were quiet (the 18th often falls during finals) while others were exciting. One year she celebrated at Modern Times and that signature JDP solidarity came through - several folks she had never met before came to help celebrate including a few ladies from the RESISTE crew! [Shout out to Marlena! - Friends at first sight ;D] Last year her husband arranged an event in Baja California, Mexico and she was lucky to celebrate with Gaby, Reka, Darielle and Sarah McDaniel. That's representation from four cohorts! (Another hallmark of the JDP - our friendships cross cohorts.) She is grateful to all the amazing women who have taken time to get to know her and count her among their friends. She loves how our program brings folks of all walks together and creates lifelong friendships. Her favorite birthday present was - without a doubt - her PhD! She turned 35 last year and the very next day, she graduated with her fellow JDPers. Being hooded on stage by Dr. Santa Cruz was an amazing experience matched only by the feeling she gets when she sees her framed degree hanging on her office wall. That joint degree is a special accomplishment. It was worth it! 👩🏻🎓
