COVID-19 sparked initiatives to digitalize contact tracing. Apple and Google proposed a framework using a particular type of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons to broadcast to neighboring devices their physical proximity. Those diagnosed with COVID-19 would then upload their history of identifiers, for others to download and compare locally to learn if they have been exposed.
