#StudentSpotlight: Ashley Mondestin (Evening Conservatory Class of 2022, @madammondestin): The play that inspires me the most is Lorraine Hansbury’s “A Raisin in the Sun.” It was the first play I ever read on my own. Not only is it a play that the story centers on a Black family, but it was also written by a Black woman (who I recently learned was queer). As an actor, who also writes, this play inspires me to not only want to act in plays but to write them as well. As a queer black woman, I’m constantly searching-- for meaning, connection, my self, my voice; I spent a gross amount of time waiting for someone else to give me permission to be myself. I’m now in a more comfortable place in my skin and who I am. This impacts the type of student that I am when studying acting; it motivates me to apply all that I’m learning in class and allow myself to be freed up by the tools so that I can achieve one of the studio’s (and my own) aim of being an artist that is independent. I often focus on songwriting, and recorded and released a music project through an extension of myself that I named “Madam Mondestin;” I chose this moniker as an attempt to reclaim my autonomy as the co-creator of my life and dubbed myself to be “the madam of my destiny!

#StudentSpotlight: Tori Anderson (3-Year Conservatory Class of 2021, @toomuch_tori) "You can't be boring. Life is boring. The weather is boring. Actors must not be boring." - Stella Adler. Growing up in a small town in the middle of Wyoming, my hobbies included riding my horse through the McDonald's drive-through and playing in a bluegrass band. New York City seemed an unreachable fantasy. When I was auditioning for grad schools and got a callback for Stella, suddenly the fantasy became reality. I was living in New York... getting incredibly lost, but in NYC! I've been learning and growing, both as an actor and as a human being thanks to knowledgeable instructors who want to share all they know. Then the pandemic hit. School closed; Zoom became the new normal. We're about to start performing our third year shows- all online. How would we ever overcome this enormous challenge; It was like staring into a huge abyss and wondering, "well, now what." But we're doing it! It's happening, and it's actually going fabulously. It might just be that I'm looking at the bright side, but, it's been amazing to adjust this craft to these new circumstances. The best part is, with Stella Adler’s technique, it's been a fairly easy process to find ways to work that suit this unique world we find ourselves in. Of course, there have been challenges, but having such a great community and support system has helped us to overcome them, together. We're making the proverbial lemonade out of lemons, and it is turning out to be quite delicious in my opinion! In summary, don't be boring, look on the bright side, and... drink lemonade! #stellaadler #actingschool #conservatory #dramaschool

#StudentSpotlight: Sònia Victoria Werner (NYU Tisch Class of 2023, @svikki.w): “You will only fail to learn if you do not learn from failing” ~Stella Adler. For the longest time, I always pursued what I believed to be the ‘right’ answer or the ‘correct’ way to do something. The mere notion of failing was daunting. In my training last year, I realized how limiting this fear-ridden mentality was. I’ve learned that mistakes are valuable—embracing flexibility, notes, and moments of ‘failure’ and learning from them is growth in its truest form. I’m finding it more and more comfortable now to pause and say to myself in rehearsal, ‘this isn’t working so what can I change? What can I play with?’ without harboring any judgment. I knew early on that I wanted to pursue a life of long-term creative joy/growth and artistic spontaneity and acting fulfills that pursuit in so many ways. The artist I aspire to be is a wholly versatile one and I’m constantly looking to learn new things along the way! I’ve been training at the Stella Adler Studio since my junior year of high school, and I feel so lucky to have been placed into this studio for my primary training at NYU as I continue to pursue truth and humanity through acting! #stellaadler @tischdrama #actingschool

#StudentSpotlight: Aaron Patterson (3-Year Conservatory Class of 2023, @aaron_jp98) “When I went to high school I began to play football. And I was good enough to get a scholarship to play in college and naturally with this the dream of playing in the NFL emerges. And when that dream fell through I just decided to just work and travel. I moved from North Carolina to Texas and started working in the oilfields. On my off days I would travel all over the country. I still had a dream of acting but I just didn’t know how it was going to work. Then one day when I was seeking and researching acting books I came across Stella Adler’s “ The Art Of Acting” and this book changed my life completely. From that point on I started planning my move to New York because I had to make my dream happen. Stella Adler’s conservatory has changed my life not just as an actor but as a human being. I am a better listener and also my interactions with people outside of the studio has been much more fulfilling.” #stellaadler #conservatory #actingschool

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” Martin Luther King Jr., letter from a Birmingham Jail #MLKday
