  • WHY BRANDING > LOGO DESIGN 🌟 If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “All that strategy stuff is great and all, but I just need a simple logo.” I understand why you think that, but i have to disagree. I can tell you from first hand experience that a logo alone is not enough to build an intentional relationship with your tar- get audience, which is the key to growing a business that has a community behind it. Think about it like this. You wouldn’t tell a photographer “So I really just need one good picture to use as my profile photo. Can you just take one for me?”. That would be ridiculous, because we all know that a full photoshoot is necessary. If you brand is a house, your logo is simply the doormat. One logo is going to do absolutely nothing for your business. Without the strategy and full storytelling aspect of branding, a logo is nothing more than an embellishment. You’re still finding your niche, building a portfolio, and learning your voice. You are constantly seeing other designers on Pinterest and IG who are so GOOD. After a few months of not quite loving your brand or website, you find it. A whole new style that feels so YOU. You are soon obsessed. No other style has ever made you feel this way. So, you rebrand. You see it as an opportunity to narrow your taste, your offerings, your niche! Woo! This is it! Now you will get the clients you want and create dreamy projects too! Things are fun for awhile, you’re obsessed with your new branding and the website makeover you spent weeks on. You’re feeling pretty good. Until… those feelings slowly wear off. A few months pass by and that initial infatuation with this certain style and niche fades. You start to panic. “My branding doesn’t even reflect me!” But then, the stars align and, after weeks of feeling inferior, you find it. Another style. THIS. IS. IT. You rebrand, change your style, and the process starts all over again. Sound familiar? You, my friend, are not alone. There is SUCH pressure in the design community to have the BEST brand identity, the coolest website, the prettiest Insta feed. We are constantly critiquing our own work, comparing our websites and personal branding to every other designer we follow, always feeling inadequate. But, its a lie. Hot take: Rebranding yourself every few months devalues the very service you are trying to provide. You are showing your audience that you really don’t know how to create a sustainable brand. So what should we do instead? 1. Build strategic brands that align with your voice, personality, & long term goals. Not with what’s trending right now. 2. Confront the fact that you will always think someone else is better than you. Stop competing. 3. Start using your portfolio as your creative play space rather than rebranding your biz.
