  • TCM and Fertility - 3 main organs🌸

Kidneys: the #1 organ involved in conception.
* Water element; regulates the entire endocrine system.
* This is the genetic makeup of the baby - also supports spleens function of nourishing the baby. Any genetic imbalance is a result of the kidneys.
* Bones, teeth, brain, and hearing are regulated by kidneys. Aging, development, and genetic blueprint. Failure to thrive is also kidneys.
* Kidneys control brain - cognition. Water metabolism - urination.
* Signs of kidney imbalance: low back pain, fear, panic attacks, salt cravings. Modern kidney challenges include insulin spikes (hormone regulation). Diabetes is a kidney issue and asthma will deplete the kidneys overtime.
 - Acu points: Kidney 3, Kidney 16, Ren 6

Liver: regulates the flow of blood and qi. It also regulates ovulatory hormones and emotional balance. Rules the tendons and the eyes; the liver is all about flexibility and movement.
* Imbalance = painful periods, PMS, lack of flexibility, belching, heartburn, tension headaches, sour food cravings. Liver is about connection with source.
* Use bitter greens; dandelion, fermented vegetables. Meditation, stress reduction, movement that encourages flexibility (gentle yoga).
 - Acu points: Liver 3

Spleen: regulates the thyroid, progesterone, and nourishes the baby.
*Earth element; food, water, nourishment. It holds the baby in as well as our organs (prolapse/hernia is a spleen issue).
*Transforming food and drink into Qi and blood and body floods. Digestion; muscles. Morning sickness = the spleen isn’t able to transform food and drink. *Sleepiness after a meal. Heavy bleeding - spleen is supposed to hold the blood.
*Frequent periods and spotting. Worry; obsessive-compulsive. Imbalance = sweet cravings. Time for contemplation is important; being unplugged; exercise that builds arms and leg muscles (light weights, swimming).
 - Acu points: Spleen 3

*When speaking about miscarriage or pre-term labour, the same organs are involved.

*Acupuncture, dietary + lifestyle, and herbal support are a fantastic way to balance these organs for conception and during pregnancy 🌿

  • 🚫 Pharmaceutical drugs are not without their side effects 🚫

- Accutane “isotrentinoin”: negatively impacts your liver function and central nervous system. It has been linked to inflammatory bowel disease, depression, and increased rates of suicide.
- Antibiotics: destroys all of your good bacteria and wreaks havoc on your microbiome. You are your microbiome and the key is not destroying this precious system but supporting the right microbes to flourish.
- Birth control: by supplying an exogenous hormone you are only masking the underlying issue and becoming vulnerable to an entire list of unfortunate risks: cervical, breast, and liver cancer, stroke, gall bladder disease, and inflammatory bowel disease to name a few.
- Steroid creams: cause skin thinning (atrophy), stretch marks, easy bruising, enlarged blood vessels, and negatively impact adrenal function.

So, what do you do instead? We must go to the ROOT cause and harmonize your body by addressing the following:
- Dietary factors: are you consuming inflammatory/mucous-forming foods?
- Gut health: do you have gut dysbiosis (an imbalance of your microbial flora), parasites, yeast, or worms?
- Organs of elimination: is your lymphatic system backed up? Is your liver working efficiently to remove toxins?
- Hormones: are they in balance? Do you have excess estrogen, androgen/DHT, or testosterone levels? Do you have low progesterone? How are your cortisol levels?
- Lifestyle: are you exercising? Are you exposed to chemical irritants in your personal care products, cleaning products, makeup, deodorant, hair, or any fragrances?

Remember that your body is speaking to you in signs and symptoms and that acne is an indication of an imbalance on a deeper level. Thankfully, there are so many natural and supportive ways to address it while also making you your healthiest, most vibrant self 💖

  • 🌿WELLNESS PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS🌿:

I’m so excited to share a few of my winter favourites by @landartcanada! They are a Canadian company that produces high-quality Ecocert NOP organic products that are also vegan and gluten-free. Here are some of my wellness essentials this season:

MUSHROOM EXTRACT: a blend of medicinal mushrooms that stimulate and balance the immune system, reduce inflammation, improve energy, and increase your body’s resilience to stress (especially during change of season!)

BLACK CUMIN OIL: used to stimulate digestion and helpful for bloating, colitis, and intestinal spasms. Also acts as a bronchodilator and has an action similar to anti-histamines (helpful for respiratory issues and allergies). Can treat skin irritations like eczema, acne, and skin infections.

VITAMIN D3: for the most part, Canadians are deficient in Vitamin D (especially during the winter months given the lack of sunlight and our distance from the equator). This is one of the labs I love to order as it informs how much vitamin D to dose in support of a healthy immune system, bone health, energy, and overall wellbeing!

OREGANO OIL: an excellent natural anti-microbial and anti-viral, using oregano oil is a powerful way to treat infections as well as correct gut dysbiosis and overgrowths of opportunistic bacteria. It can also be used to treat throat infections, canker sores, and skin infections.

TEA TREE OIL: this is a broad spectrum anti fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial agent that can help treat acne and fungal infections like athlete’s foot when used topically. It’s a great herb to have in your medicinal arsenal!

CHLOROPHYLL: I love chlorophyll for its ability to alkalinize, eliminate toxins, and even act as an internal deodorant for your body (if you notice a strong odour coming from your sweat glands, you likely need to detox and incorporate more alkaline foods!)

*This is not a substitute for medical advice. Please consult with your naturopathic doctor to decide on a wellness protocol that is right for you*

  • 💗PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIO 💗

Thank you to @pelvicgoddess for assessing and taking care of my postpartum pelvic floor! I believe it’s essential for every woman after labour (and definitely before birth) to assess all of the muscles in the pelvic area. Whether you have urinary incontinence issues or not, this is an important piece of anatomy that needs attention - to make sure it’s strong and if you’re about to give birth, ensure there aren’t any muscles that are too tense. If there are, it can actually pull the baby to one side during delivery and increase the likelihood of your baby getting stuck on the way down.

Here are 3 KEY assessments you should have prior to birth:
1. Lower abdominal fascia and uterine ligaments - will torque the baby if too tight on one side.
2. Mobility of pelvic bones - assess and mobilize
3. Mobility of pelvic floor muscles - requires normal tone, otherwise they can anchor the pelvic bones from opening up. When labor stalls, releasing the pelvic floor muscles are essential. Tension in the pelvic floor muscles limit the ability of the pelvis to open. We can asses the pelvic bones prior to birth and make a correction if needed.

Hayley was absolutely wonderful and I recommend checking her out!

For me, postpartum, she released some muscles that were a bit too tight and made sure my kegel game was also on point ☺️

  • DIAPERS: How to Choose the Best for your Baby 👶🏼👶🏽👶🏾👶🏿

The toxins in diapers are a scary issue, especially for a sensitive developing baby! Looking at the ingredients of some of the top brands (ie Pampers and Huggies) are alarming to say the least. Here’s the low-down on what’s concerning:

Phthalates/Fragrance: endocrine disruptors & human carcinogens. Fragrances emit phthalates into the air, causing baby to breathe in the toxic fumes & also absorb them through skin contact.

Dioxins/Chlorine: most diapers are bleached white with chlorine, resulting in a byproduct called dioxin. Dioxins are among the most toxic chemicals known to science & listed by the EPA as highly carcinogenic chemicals.

Polypropylene/Polyethylene: Pampers’s top sheet is made of polypropylene & its back sheet is made of polyethylene film. There is also a layer of petrolatum lotion (same as Vaseline - you shouldn’t use this either) & it could be contaminated with PAHs, which are carcinogens.

Polyester: There are many types of polyester diapers so the synthetic cloth diaper category can be a bit confusing. If it’s not made from 100% cotton, hemp, or wool, then it is made from a synthetic fiber. Ex. microfiber, microterry

Dyes: the images on diapers are made with dyes like Blue 106/124, Yellow 3, & Orange 3. They are carcinogenic & endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

DIAPERS TO AVOID:
- PAMPERS & HUGGIES: uses fragrances, phthalates, chlorine, dyes, polypropylene & polyethylene (plastics). Note: although there is now “Pamper’s Pure” which is much better than their conventional brand, they’re still not environmentally friendly or compostable.

CLEAN*ER* DIAPERS:
NEST, BAMBO NATURE & ECO BY NATY: certified free of dangerous chemicals, incl chlorine, phthalates, heavy metals, formaldehyde, PVC, allergens & substances classified as skin irritants, sensitizing, & carcinogenic. Made from compostable materials!

ORGANIC CLOTH DIAPERS: extra work to clean but worth it & will save you $. These are the cleanest, most breathable, & environmentally friendly.

SEVENTH GEN, HELLO BELLO: heavy metal & toxin free, chlorine-free, latex-free, & fragrance-free. However, NOT compostable
