Ditch the what about me? attitude. Sure, I'm a woman of color. But that doesn't give me a pass on racism of black people in the US. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Many of us come from countries deeply affected by colorism or colonialism. It runs deep. We were used to hearing things that weren't okay. In countries affected by colonialism, people favored the light-skinned. It was a sign of class or beauty. Dark skin was undesirable. Black was for entertainment, but white was the end goal. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was ingrained in the culture and it's my duty to deprogram what I heard and saw. Saying this will piss off a lot of people (Enneagram 9🙈) But make no mistake: I am not brushing off the hardships of my people and the generations of suffering in mine and nearby countries. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, as Americans, without that deprogramming, we will continue to be a part of that problem whether we know it or not. What we need is unity and inclusivity. I've been trying to work on this. And I will continue to work on it even after it's trendy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Friends, if you have a platform whether 1 follower or 1 million, this will be unpopular but STOP JUST REPOSTING CUTE GRAPHICS to remind everyone you're not racist (and not saying anything). We all want to hear your OWN words of how you will work harder to be a better citizen. I have work to do and I hope we can all join together to be more inclusive. I've been LOVING hearing not just white people, but POC talk about taking action in their personal lives and platforms. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you're worried about posting something because you see everyone else doing it, stop overthinking it. A lot of us want to hear what you have to say, and if you stay silent, we'll wonder. Remember, your voice and what you do matters. It’s not “bullying” to say that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was posting stories, but those only last 24 hours. This post is here to stay so that people know where I stand. Black lives matter.
You may have seen people who label themselves as brand strategists. What does this mean exactly and how is this different from designing? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm giving you brand strategy basics. This is the tip of the iceberg. There's definitely a lot of planning and research that goes along with it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you want to read it in more detail, head over to my blog!
Oh, hey! That's me! I'm the brand designer and strategist behind Breezy Camper. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here's a topic I rarely ever get into. Not sure why, but it's important! As an entrepreneur or business owner, how are you making sure you are supportive & inclusive?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've met and had some amazing conversations lately with other bosses who are quickly becoming examples to those in their own communities. Let's talk about women & minority-led businesses! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Even in the designer community, though it's an encouraging & wonderful one, has some gaps I'd like to fill. I, along with many others, want to make sure ALL are seen, heard, and celebrated. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Asians in arts and entertainment are so often overlooked. We are now, just barely, making it known that we're here and we can also do awesome things. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ POC women are now rising and really owning these platforms. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you help lift up others who aren't always represented? That's what I also hope to do with the summit (Scale with Ease). I want to encourage people who may look like me or any of the other speakers that we CAN be bosses. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Shoutout to these amazing women I had conversations with recently who are representing (there are way more but I was talking to these ladies the past few weeks)! Will you follow and support them? @brandedbybernel @penguindesigning @danajamesmwangi @mollyhostudio @sandrachau @_joycechristine
It wasn’t until I met people who went on their own to pursue their own businesses, did I really consider it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Most of the time I’ve worked in offices, we worked with clients who were entrepreneurs or owned small businesses. It was a different world getting to know people who went after something strategically but fearlessly.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After being fed up with toxic environments and gossip (enneagram 9 here, leave your drama at home 😂), I took a huge leap and quit.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I realized those moments in life where people inspire you THAT much after one or two conversations are rare. I had to go for it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Literally no idea what I was doing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But you know what changed in me dramatically? I went from working with my head down to obsessed student. I’ve never stopped learning about entrepreneurship since and I’m hungry for more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And the best part is, I’ve met soooo many amazing people doing the same thing. All in all, it’s worth the risks I’ve made to get to this mindset 👏🏻
Alright, here's a quick Friday story. Do you ever why it's some people make such a big deal over small things? And in this case, I mean it in a positive sense.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was STOKED to get this massive impale-you kind of palm leaf, a new candle, a wooden box, and a ceramic vase.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You're like, okay good for you I guess? You got some things. Big deal. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These things I've been EYEING up for years. YEARS! I never thought I was allowed to get them until I got the perfect house with the perfect furniture and a perfectly clutter-free home. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was always thinking I'll just wait. I'll wait. I'll wait. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The underlying thoughts that symbolized this was wishful thinking and literally waiting for something that I could actually control. I didn't feel like I deserved this for this, and this, and this reason. I've been so used to criticism my whole life I would just do it to myself (hello, therapy!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So here's the weekend food for thought: If there's something you can control doing that will enhance your life, happiness, well-being, or business, why are you waiting to do it?
