#repost @lyndhurst_mansion ・・・ Did you know that Lyndhurst shares history with unseen architecture under the ground? In the 1830s NYC was in need of water (for health and hygiene) and so the Croton River was connected to the city via a 41 mile underground aqueduct. It took five years to complete. Lyndhurst’s first owner, William Paulding, sold the land cutting through his propery to the aqueduct project around the same time his new summer home 'Knoll' was nearing completion. The Croton Aqueduct provided water to the city until 1965, coinciding with Lyndhurst opening as a museum to the public! Now you can walk the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, which is a NYS Park, and cross the Lyndhurst property. You’ll see the mansion at the top of the hill, the Frame of the Greenhouse, and even the c. 1911 Pool Building (which is currently undergoing restoration work)!
Sunday, June 30, 2019 - 12:00pm Take an after-lunch stroll on the Aqueduct Trail. Meet at Irvington’s Town Hall at 85 Main Street. Visit the Tiffany Reading Room, one of a handful of Tiffany interiors. Meander north on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail to Lyndhurst and back, admiring architectural landmarks, including the skeletal remains of a Lord & Burnham conservatory, and Hudson River views. Learn the history of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the millionaires who lived along the trail in the 1800’s. On the return trip, you might stop to tour Jay Gould’s Lyndhurst or Washington Irving’s Sunnyside mansion (paid guided tours are available at both). #oldcrotonaqueducttrail #crotonaqueduct #oldcrotonaqueduct #irvingtonny #lyndhurst #washingtonirving #sunnyside #historicmansions #tiffanyreadingroom #lord&burnham #hudsonriver #irvingtontownhall
