Today I'm locking myself away to dive into my Japanese study. I love Japan. I've been several times. Yet each time I've gone there, I knew I was missing out on organic interactions with the locals because I knew like 2 words of Japanese. So, my goal for the rest of the year is to get a bit of conversational Japanese. It's giving me something tangible and non-work related to work towards through lockdown. It's one of the few things keeping me sane, if I'm honest. And also, I firmly believe language learning is one of the greatest ways to build empathy. More on that another day. Buuut I totally dropped the ball on it in the last 2 weeks because is was takin' care of bidness. So I'm putting my head down and catching up today. What are you doing this weekend? You know those people you meet at parties (remember them?) - the ones who have that effortless cool about them? They're at ease in their own skin. It's almost like you've known that person forever. And when they tell a story? Wow. They can captivate the whole room. Their stories can stick in youro mind forever. The same goes for well-defined brands. A brand is not just a logo, a set of colours, or a tagline. It's a whole dang personality with an umistakeable voice and a story. When you define and create guidelines for your brand voice, and then they're used consistently, your brand becomes that effortlessly cool yet genuine storyteller at the party. Why does any of this matter? There are a bunch of reasons why it's a good idea to define your brand voice. 1. You communicate your story with consistent turns of phrase and patterns 2. It creates a quick point of reference so it's easy to get new writers onboard 3. You create more brand recognition and thus impact 3. If you set up your brand voice to mirror your ideal customer's way of speaking (hint: you should be doing that), then brand voice guidelines helps make sure you're always doing that. 4. This is my approach: I do in-depth research and creative brainstorming first.
