This is Nathan’s husband, Benjamin. At 3pm today, Nathan was admitted to A and E at Barnet Hospital. Your messages of anger have been processed. Please now send love.
I might be unnaturally in love with this shawl, currently on my needles. The pic shows how the two sides are coming together on this double-knitted peacock of a beauty. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So far—and I might be a little crazy—I haven’t taken a single note or charted a single stitch. It is the way of things with some of my favourite designs, that without much manipulation on my part, they can sometimes flow directly from my brain, onto the needles and beyond, seemingly without any conscious effort needed at all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In all honesty, I had been toying with the cast-on construction for quite a few weeks before I got it just as I wanted it (see top-centre and bottom-centre edges of the pic to see where the cast on happens) and since then, it has been all systems go. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The bulk of the feathers pattern coalesced while I was in Finland, and the Finnish word for peacock is “Riinkinkukko” (pronounced “REEN-kin-cook-oh” with a beautifully rolled R at the beginning), which might just make a rather lovely name for the pattern, and be a very fitting tribute to a very beautiful country, my memory of which is flooded with blues and greens from the lakes and the forests that are so prevalent there. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The yarn is the Terra base from @thefibrecompany, and it is utterly sumptuous to work with. With 40% merino, 40% baby alpaca, and 20% silk, it runs through the fingers like a dream! Thank you so much to Daphne from TFC for the generous yarn support, I love everything you do. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What’s your current favourite on-the-needles project, and what aspect of it are you enjoying so much? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #Riinkinkukko #FinlandIsBlueAndGreen #Sockmatician #Knitting #DoubleKnitting #GUYSKNIT #DoubleKnittersDoItTwice #TheSecondTimeReversed #SockmaticianDotCom
One year on almost to the day, since I sent out the first ever post to use the #Diversknitty hashtag—a word I made up—from Helsinki airport, I am again, at Helsinki airport, and I feel compelled to speak up about this issue once again, but this time from a very different perspective. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There are now over 17000 posts using that hashtag. My word. And it is time to reboot it as a tool for good. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Diversity is a beautiful and NECESSARY thing, and SHOULD be FOUGHT FOR, and I will defend to my dying breath the rights of marginalised groups to be heard, seen, respected, represented, embraced and celebrated. That is the world we SHOULD live in. It is disgusting that we don’t already, and many people are fighting justly and righteously to ensure that it can be the case. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *********************************************** Please be aware that I’ve only deleted the end of this post because I needed the space to say the following: I REALLY didn’t want to do this, but I have turned off commenting on this post. Usually, I allow freedom of ideas, because I respect the rights of people to have opinions that differ from my own, and I encourage respectful debate. Sadly, so many people seem to be either incapable of remaining respectful, to me (which is fine, I’m a big boy and I poked the hive, so I was prepared for the fall out), to each other (less acceptable, because ironically that just proves how necessary my plea for respect has turned out to be) and to members of my family. WHICH IS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Say what you like to me, I can take it, but come after those I love and at your own risk. So I am not deleting this post, just turning off the comments. Consider this to be my statement of my policy, rather like Ravelry’s recent one. My house: my rules, and I will not tolerate insults, bullying, hate speech, or anything else of that kind. I will just say this, and then I’m going back to the important things in my life: regardless of whether or not you agree with me, turn against your allies, and you end up with no one in your corner.
