Dear friends, My Insight Timer course on Creating A Safe World From Within is live! It would be easy to feel scared, overwhelmed, and despondent at present. To feel powerlessness. A worldwide health pandemic, a sixth mass extinction crisis, extreme inequality of power and privilege - all culminating in a spiritual crisis. This is the overwhelming narrative of our times. But we cannot forget the most important thing: We write the story. We have the power. We’ve just forgotten it. Drawing on the psychology of human behaviour, behavioural neuroscience, and the philosophy and practice of mindfulness and self-compassion, this course will focus your attention towards creating more inner awareness, stability, and safety. It is designed to remind you of your immense power, to help you understand the inextricable link between your inner and outer world, and to help us all co-write a better next chapter for humanity. Together, let’s create a safe world, starting from within. You can be the first to check it out by clicking on the link below. Love to hear what you think! ❤️ ..... You can access the course either through the Insight Timer app, or your web browser. The first day is free and then you will need to either sign up for Insight Timer’s free, cancel-anytime trial to stream it, or you can buy the course for 20 USD and download it to either your phone or web browser. Hope you enjoy! ..... 📸 @nicholashannah_

Proud to have my piece on how we can move into action for our planet post covid, in the winter edition of @peppermintmagazine. In summary - 1) A significant predictive factor as to whether someone moves into post-traumatic stress or post-traumatic growth following a trauma is whether they are able to derive meaning from their experience or not. Those who cannot find meaning in adversity tend to move towards depression. 2) Therefore as our country moves out of this traumatic phase, perhaps one of the most important things we can do as individuals and a collective is to take time out to create meaning from the bushfires and this pandemic. What is the planet trying to tell you? What meaning or internal story do you derive from this time of forced stopping? 3) It will be different for everyone and that’s ok. Choose your meaning from this time in isolation, share it with your family and friends and networks and take action from it. There’s no time to waste. Xx

E m o t i o n s . Had a wonderful time on insta live with @_aspace this morning, guiding a morning self-compassion meditation for their School of Deep Feelings. One thing I’ve loved about this crazy time is the newfound respect and value that we all seem to be placing on meditation, health and self-care. The meditation is live for the rest of today over at the @_aspace homepage if you’d like to do the practice. Today is the perfect day to become a friend to yourself. Much love, Emily

M e d i t a t i o n . Every day for the past two weeks I have been guiding a live Facebook meditation 8.30am week days in collaboration with @medibank and their #livebetterathome initiative. It aims to help us all to eat, move and feel better while we begin to spend more time at home. We now have over 8k people interested in our meditation series and each morning as I wait to go live, I feel immense gratitude for the practice of meditation. Every teacher I know has been asked to run a myriad of online sessions to help us all cope and to help us all be with ourselves again after years, even decades of busy-ness. It’s like the whole world has been forced into a Vipassa retreat at the same time, and we must all begin the curious task of confronting ourselves. So if like me, you’re finding it hard to be ‘productive’, or get more than a few tasks done each day, that’s perfectly ok. Perhaps this time isn’t for doing. Perhaps it’s just for being. Learning to be with ourselves again. Imagine a world where just 10% of people coming through this became more comfortable in their skin, more connected with their local and global community and less likely to consume or look outside of themselves to feel better. That would have profound shifts globally. If you want to be in that 10%, I know one tool that can help you get there. See you 8.30am Monday 😊 Link in bio Xx

U n c e r t a i n t y . The past few weeks have been incredibly stress provoking for many, with the world around us changing by the day. Things that once felt certain, such as work, routine and for many, safety, became uncertain, causing many us of to default into fight or flight, high levels of anxiety and fear and stress. You may not know this, but in 2000, Dr. Shelley Taylor and her research team at the University of California described another response exhibited by humans and some animals in response to threat. They named it the ‘tend-and-befriend’ response. It refers to the urge to protect family and offspring (tending) and to seek out social support for mutual defense (befriending). In evolutionary psychology, tend-and-befriend is theorized as having evolved as the typical ‘female’ response to stress, but all people, regardless of gender are capable of doing it. So next time you feel anxious or afraid, try calling a friend, waving to your neighbor, carrying out a little act of kindness, or offering help to someone in your local community. Chances are it will make you feel better, more connected and give you an increased feeling of safety, all while making someone else’s day! . . . . . . #uncertainty #tendandbefriend #stressresponse #fightflightfreeze #mindfulnessofemotions #mindfulnesspractice #mindfulliving #mindfulnesscoach #meditationpractice #selfawarenessjourney #heartfulness #selfcompassion #spiritualactivism #spiritualité #environmentalist #climategrief #mentalhealthquotes #psychologist #wellbeingwarrior #scienceofwellbeing #environmentalpsychology #emilytoner #clinicalpsychologist #ecology #deepecology #climateactivist #climateactivists #climatejustice #climatejusticenow #activehope

S o l i d a r i t y . We are all in this together. See you 8.30am weekdays on Facebook live for a 15 minute guided meditation from my living room to yours! During this intense time @medibank reached out to see if I could share the powerful practice of meditation with everyone at home. Live Better at Home takes a holistic approach to health under the pillars ‘Eat’, ‘Move’ and ‘Feel’. These activities are available to everyone and can be done at any time of the day. I will be hosting a live guided meditation daily to help ground and center us into our day, and this will also be available as a saved video in the event - so join me live at 8.30am AEDT tomorrow, or listen back whenever suits. Let’s really take care of ourselves and eachother this week xo #solidarity #connected #medibank #livebetterathome #grounding #groundingtechniques #mindfulness #meditationteacher #clinicalpsychologist #mindfulliving #startthedayright

It is hard to put into words the past week. Watching this crisis unfolding around us, feeling scared, having our security ripped from under us. It is hard to grapple with the everchanging uncertainty. If you feel scared or sad or angry or lonely right now, then remember that the heart connects over any distance. If you miss someone, just think about them and send them as much love as you can muster. Or give them a call and have a laugh together. If you feel scared, put your hand to your heart and hold yourself for a moment. It will pass. Everything always eventually passes. Sending all my heartfulness out to every single one of you. May we all come together at this time and build a more connected and caring world.

E m o t i o n a l A g i l i t y. Imagine a world where everyone was self-aware and emotionally agile? It’s very easy to get stuck in an emotion, whether it is fear, anger, hopelessness, or shame. But according to neuroscientist @jillboltetaylor , emotions can only take 90 seconds to fully express themselves chemically in the brain and body once triggered. So what are we all doing to stay stuck for so much longer?! ⠀⠀ Avoidance, suppression and indulgence that’s what! If you were to simply allow yourself to feel what you are feeling at the level of the body, without trying to get rid of it, change it, or without re-triggering it through going over the situation again and again in your mind (indulgence) then you will find emotion passes by a lot quicker. This is a skill that requires practice, and the best way to start is by sitting down and noticing what your body and mind is doing, also known as mindfulness practice. You can find free guided meditations to help you at the link in my bio. 🙌🏼 . . . . . . #emotions #acceptance #mindfulacceptance #mindfulnessofemotions #mindfulnesspractice #mindfulliving #mindfulnesscoach #meditationpractice #selfawarenessjourney #heartfulness #selfcompassion #spiritualactivism #spiritualité #environmentalist #climategrief #mentalhealthquotes #psychologist #wellbeingwarrior #scienceofwellbeing #environmentalpsychology #emilytoner #clinicalpsychologist #ecology #deepecology #climateactivist #climateactivists #climatejustice #climatejusticenow #activehope
