• Local town revitalization through entertainment
• Why mathematics is included in compulsory education
• Breakdance and self-expression
• Personal brand management
• Sea turtles and ocean conservation

BSCIS is pleased to begin the 5th Annual Grade 12 Capstone Graduation Presentations on Wednesday, January 28, and Thursday, January 29. These first two days mark the start of a total of ten presentation days taking place across late January and February.
Capstone projects are a British Columbia graduation requirement and represent the culmination of students’ K–12 learning. Through inquiry-based projects driven by personal interest, students apply the academic skills, competencies, and experiences they have developed throughout their school years.
Topics presented during the first week include:
• Differences between Japanese and Canadian education
• Economics and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
• Behavioral economics
• Mathematics hidden in everyday life
• Explicit vs. implicit language learning
• Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) through picture book creation
• The relationship between children’s home environments and MBTI
• What companies look for in new graduates
• Book publishing
• Learning the guitar
• Developing artificial intelligence systems that play games
Presentations are primarily conducted in English, and many students have also prepared Japanese materials to help parents and other members of our school community engage with their work. All presentations will take place in Room 121, and we warmly welcome our school community to attend any presentation.
We look forward to sharing our students’ work and celebrating the culmination of their learning at BSCIS.

We wish the BSCIS community an upcoming happy and healthy New Year, extending our sincere gratitude to Principal Mr. McGeer as he enters a well-deserved retirement.
More information about this leadership transition, along with a farewell message from Mr. McGeer, can be found on the the upcoming Term Two report cards.
As we prepare for 2026, we would like to share several important academic updates for families:
1. Term Two Report Cards
Term Two report cards will be released digitally via HARTS around December 20.
These reports reflect your child’s progress toward end-of-year academic expectations using BC Ministry of Education benchmarks.
Please note that BC teachers will be on winter holidays until Opening Ceremony Day on January 8. If you have questions regarding grades, you may contact the teacher directly; however, responses will be delayed until following the holiday period.
2. Student-Led Conferences (Grades 10 & 11)
Student-Led Conferences (SLCs) are a required BC Ministry of Education reporting activity and will take place in January for all Grade 10 and Grade 11 students.
During SLCs, students lead a one-to-one conversation with their parent or guardian about their learning by presenting their achievements, challenges, and goals. A BC teacher will be present to supervise and support each session. Each conference is 20 minutes.
Parents of Grade 10 and Grade 11 students should sign up on behalf of their child using the links previously shared on BLEND.
3. Literacy Assessments
Literacy Assessment 12
• Write 1: January 13 (12:00–15:00)
• Write 2 (Make-up): January 26 (12:00–15:00)
Literacy Assessment 10
• January 20 (08:20–11:20)
4. 5th Annual Capstone Graduation Presentations
The 5th Annual Capstone Graduation Presentations will begin on January 28 and run across 10 presentation dates in January and February.
We thank our families for their continued support and look forward to a strong and meaningful start to the new year at BSCIS.

BSCIS will hold its annual Parent–Teacher Conferences on November 17 (Mon), 18 (Tue), and 21 (Fri).
These 20-minute appointments, starting every half hour from 16:30 to 19:00, offer parents and guardians the opportunity to meet individually with teachers to discuss student progress and learning as we prepare to enter Term Three.
All meetings will be conducted in English, but students may accompany their parents to assist with interpretation if needed. Student volunteers will also be available to guide families from the Rose Café to each teacher’s meeting location.
Please note that parents can find the sign-up link for these conferences in our latest communication on BLEND.
We look forward to welcoming you and discussing your child’s continued growth and learning.

On Wednesday, October 29th BSCIS will host its annual Halloween event in partnership with our host school. The BC teachers are busy planning our group costume theme.
The BSCIS Teachers and the BSCIS Student Council will host our events for our students during period 1 and 7 for JHS and SHS respectively. 🎃
Please note that beyond the costuming guidelines set by our Japanese host school, that realistic weapons and/or culturally inappropriate costumes are not allowed. When in doubt please confirm with a BSCIS teacher before the day.
