  • • PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER • Fully assembled locking lid bowl with bent Ash handle. It was two in the morning the first time I eagerly put this together after spending about six hours straight on it. It took a bit of fettling to get the locking mechanism working smoothly (this is my first attempt at a locking lid). I got it on with the grain correctly aligned and squeezed the handle together guiding the dowels into their sockets, I picked it up and tried the handle 'just the job' I thought, until I tried to take the lid off again and realised that the ends of the handle over hang the inner rim of the bowl preventing the lid coming off! Fortunately the handle is quite enjoyable to remove and replace and I guess it would be easier eating from the bowl without the handle attached anyway, but next time I will make sure there is the option :) Well done to @don.nalezyty.crafts and @cunliffe.alex for working it out and to @tomwardjackson - you have good 'vision'. So the quest continues, I'll spend spare moments next week thinking up things to try next time. The lid and the bowl are both made from the same piece - the lid is separated after the outside of the bowl is complete. When the bowl is locked, I wanted the grain to align so I offset the slots for the locking tabs. The handle is made from green Ash, cleft the carved with a drawknife before being gently bent round a former and left to dry and the dowels are also carved Ash. There is one rather silly thing I overlooked with this prototype - can you spot what it is?!   • End grain. Requires different tools and a different frame of mind after a week or so of turning bowls. The work takes place at a slower pace, both in terms on rotational speed on the lathe and the more mindful passes with the tools. Swipe to see the somewhat unconventional tools I use to get the job done.. On left a ring tool - I use this in roughly the same way as a pole lathe hook, pivoting on the tool rest for hollowing and cutting a nice flat bottom. On the right a 'nib gouge' - this unusual looking adaptation is surprisingly versatile, on end grain cups I use it for precise and stable entry cuts at the rim (the nib starts the cut and acts as a 'pilot' keeping the cutting edge in line) and secondly using the razor sharp 'wing' of the gouge, which when rotated creates an adjustable planing action leaving super smooth surface on both the inside and outside walls. The 200 year old Beech from down the road in Wadebridge was already ringed up when I acquired it and some of it took a bit of a beating in all the hot weather we enjoyed in the spring. To prevent any more of it cracking in the sunshine I decided to cut the whole lot up, deciding which pieces were future woodenware and which pieces would keep us warm in the winter. All the future bowls, spoons, cups and boxes were bagged up in binbags - this will stop the moisture escaping so they remain nice and green, infact the bags will be full of condensation making them a perfect breeding ground for the kinds of fungi that can create beautiful patterns in the wood. While this isn't the best way to store all species of wood, Beech is perhaps the best suited and certainly my best chance of keeping the wood full of moisture as I work through it in the coming weeks.   • Still working through that logs in, things made, offcuts and shavings out kinda flow.. well it's not really a flow right now, more of a frequently blocked mish mash but I'm certainly not complaining for one second! Visited a magnificent aquaduct this weekend (actually it was a viaduct built to transport granite with an aquaduct flowing beneath the slabs across the Luxulyan valley) It was completed in 1841 purely from enormous blocks of granite! Anyway, seeing the old leats and waterwheel features and sluice gates constructed from iron and stone being slowly consumed by nature has its impact. The foresight and effort required to construct and run such marvel is mind blowing, like an enormous precision clockwork mechanism built into the hillside itself. Now I just need to apply some of that ingenuity to my processes at home :) ps.   • A new wood for me - let me introduce you to Tulip wood (Liriodendron Tulipifera) known in the US as 'Tulip Poplar' as it grows to great heights - you can see by the size of the growth rings that it is extremely vigorous! It is actually of the Magnolia family and not related to Poplar in any way. The wood is light and strong and easily worked - it has been used by Onondaga Indians to make dugout canoes and utensils. It's odourless properties have seen it used to line wells and make food packaging.     A new wood for me - let me introduce you to Tulip wood (Liriodendron Tulipifera) known in the US as 'Tulip Poplar' as it grows to great heights - you can see by the size of the growth rings that it is extremely vigorous! It is actually of the Magnolia family and not related to Poplar in any way. The wood is light and strong and easily worked - it has been used by Onondaga Indians to make dugout canoes and utensils. It's odourless properties have seen it used to line wells and make food packaging.   • Well that's the lathe cave christened and my first 'proper' days work done since building the new workshop. When I made the decision to switch to full time making I had a diary full of restaurant orders, shops to stock, festivals to demonstrate at and one to one workshops booked - as you can imagine the majority of these opportunities have evaporated but I wouldn't change a thing. This is because the decision wasn't really driven by the ambition to make money but but to embrace a new way of life.. Rather than being at work from 7.30 til 5 every day and trying to balance making, family time and my partners work around that, I now wake up and I have everything I need around me. I spend from 7am til 1pm in the workshop then have lunch with the family and look after the children while my partner takes over 'work' and follows her creative passion in the afternoon. Once the children are in bed I usually go back to the workshop to do a little finishing or prep for the following day. This has increased our combined productive time from 8-9 hrs a day to 12-13 hrs a day so even tho the opportunities right now are fewer, life feels so much more balanced for everyone. Our time spent together is less rushed, there's more time to tend the land and efficiency in the work space is much improved. Hopefully with a little luck this will be enough to see us through the times ahead!   • It was a treat to hear this 14 Green Oak Dough Bowl found its way to its new home safely today. That was a hefty lump of wood to turn! The wood came from an Oak on a steep wet bank at the bottom of my Grandparent's garden in Cornwall, we often used to watch pigeons and jackdaws perch on the branches and once even witnessed a heron taking a rest. I am so keen to get this workshop space finished and to see how the extra space and the luxury of having all my tools under one roof impacts my work processes. It's going to be a big change from sawing logs in the woods, taking them to a tiny workshop waist deep in shavings to turn on the lathe then bringing it all home to dry and paint in the living room. I am hoping it will give me the chance to be a bit more creative rather than make me lazy! My mind is now drifting towards what will go inside.. The task of deciding what will go in became more difficult last night after seeing @jarrod__dahl demonstrate his Japanese style electric lathe and discuss the pros and cons of pole lathe vs western style lathe vs Japanese style lathe, end grain, side grain, green wood, dry wood and which techniques are transferable and which are best left alone. So much food for thought! Mixing up techniques and the evolution of craft has always of interest to me and it was fascinating to hear Jarrod's insights - thanks for sharing man. This collection has been left Natural rather than painted - I wanted to keep things simple and allow nature's processes to come to the Fore - the pieces have been turned or carved from fresh green wood and given time to dry, move and take the shape they wish. They have been oiled with tung and perilla oil and cured to a watertight finish.   • It must be time for an update on what I've been upto - I have spent the last couple of weeks with my head down, making the most of the dry weather building a new workspace. I've been planning it for a long time but other things kept taking priority. With the world on hold it has been the perfect opportunity to get on with it and now it is beginning to take shape :) The frame is made from old rafters saved from a roof I replaced a couple of years ago, it is insulated with Celotex saved from a skip on a building site, the windows are old leaded lights that I have stripped and repainted and there are some new bits too. The design is basically to sheds facing each other with the space in between a covered outdoor work area, it means I will be able to have all my tools and materials under one roof which hasn't happened before and I'll be able to set it up for efficient work flow - I can't wait to get started! There is still a long way to go to get it finished but I got the roof on today and that feels like a big step in the right direction, there's lots more progress pics on my stories so feel free to check that out for more detail or if you have any questions about the build I will do my best to answer. I had a disastrous dig-in while attempting to hollow a bowl with a hook the other day, the rest of the bowl had come out really well so I tried to save it by going deeper than the 'scar' and ended up going much thinner than I thought was sensible. As this Beech is a lot tougher than the Alder I am used to turning the resulting bowl was more than strong enough and I was reminded that it is a good idea to push your limits now and then - and also that disasters are not always disastrous. Tried some thin walled cups and jugs after that and got some really interesting shapes going on once the drying process had added its own pinch of magic.   • A trio of Alder serving spoons. This beautifully slow grown Alder grows on the river banks at the confluence of the Camel and the Ruthern - on the slice of land between the two lies Cotton Wood. It's a predominantly Sessile Oak woodland and a likely home for the Purple Hairstreak Butterfly which resides only in Oak canopies. The fringes of the wood are also populated with Alder and Sycamore which are occasionally and very selectively thinned to provide glades for hunting bats, allow light for native woodland wildflowers and to prevent encroachment of the non-native Sycamore into the Sessile Oak which is largely left alone to do its thing. It's a special place visited by otters, dippers, badgers and deer as well as home to a population of hedgehogs.   • Jugs ready for bed in the gloaming of eventide. I've added some larger additions to the family - approximately 50% taller and 500% harder to make! I need to make longer handles for the ring tools I have been using to hollow these end grain vessels. I initially proportionately increased the wall thickness but this led to a few cracking issues in the initial experimental forms - the wall thickness of the larger ones is now the same as that of the smaller ones which has thankfully cured the problem.   • This is me. I'm almost exactly two years into this adventure - to make a living from craft, work from home and spend more time enjoying the small moments in life with the ones I love. Although I've worked with wood all of my life, making woodenware is relatively new to me. I've learnt a lot over the last couple of years through experimentation, going to festivals, taking part in workshops, carving with friends and sharing ideas through the wood culture community.. I'd like to share what I've learnt with you.     This is me. I'm almost exactly two years into this adventure - to make a living from craft, work from home and spend more time enjoying the small moments in life with the ones I love. Although I've worked with wood all of my life, making woodenware is relatively new to me.   • This 8 inch bowl is now finished - you can see the wood grain as well as some tool marks through the layers of milk paint. I build up two or three coats using different shades of blue which highlight the textures when sanded or burnished. Once the painting is done, I usually clean up the rim with a sharp knife to remove any stray brush marks or paint dust from the grain then seal the whole bowl with a coat of organic raw linseed oil. This is to protect the wood from food acids and water when washing - milk paint is extremely durable and doesn't really need any extra protection but it gets a coat anyway. After a couple of minutes I wipe off the excess oil and dry the bowl with a cloth, this thin coat of oil will cure into a waterproof barrier. Other than the obvious benefits of greater creative freedom and closer connection to nature and the elements, the idea behind this change is to bring about a closer connection to my family too. Rather than being at work for 9-10 hours a day, making from home will mean my partner @dreamspell_jewellery and I can better share the care of our daughters and give us both more opportunities for creative expression.. Hopefully we will still be able to make ends meet! It's thanks to all of the support from you guys that this dream is even a possibility so a heartfelt thank you to everyone of you - as an extra thank you I'll be giving away some work in following weeks so keep an eye out for that. Been preparing the yard for the arrival of some fresh logs next week which is always an exciting time. The handle is made from a limb that fell from the old Ash tree in our garden last winter and the head was forged in a field by @j.l.burrell_toolmaker and @thefootofiron at Spoonfest this year. The last handle I made was carved with an axe and knife and I really struggled to get a nice finish on the green Ash (partly due to unfavourable grain alignment) this time round I cut the shape out with a bandsaw then tweaked it with a drawknife and I'm much happier with the result. I've given it a quick test and the edge cuts very keenly - nice one Josh :) I'm looking forward to growing into it over the coming weeks.. not from a size or weight point of view but in getting to know it's temperament intimately until it feels like an extension of myself, like all new tools they feel a little alien in the hand until a relationship has been forged over time. They are made from Alder grown in Cotton Wood which is on the hilly triangle where the Ruthern river meets the River Camel. This woodland is run as a private nature reserve with occasional thinning of Sycamore to improve habitat and Alder usually in danger of falling into the river. The Mugs are made suitable for hot drinks with multiple coats of tung oil - this is heated and applied hot to ensure a thin and even coat them cured in a kiln to ensure it polymerizes and becomes watertight, foodsafe seal. You can pre-order mugs now on my website and the finished product will be delivered in a couple of weeks. These will be sealed with 3 coats of tung oil, each coat kiln cured to ensure maximum hardness and durability. Available in the new black series colours or coastal blue/green ALSO AVAILABLE : a selection of bowls and jugs will also be available to buy right away in my traditional coastal colours as well as this black beauty in the picture!   • Shiney sharp tools mean shiney smooth surfaces. • I'm ashamed to say this is the first time I've turned with a properly honed gouge - until now I've always used my gouges straight from the grindstone which isn't at all uncommon in the turning world as it's very quick and easy to bring a fresh edge on a grinder. • I've been thinking recently about investing in a new sharpening system, either a Tormek or Sorby Pro Edge so I thought I'd take the time to hand hone a gouge to see what the difference would be. • The results are clear to see - it's possible to easily achieve a smooth shiney finish even on this very green freshly cut Alder (sometimes years of doing it the wrong way helps too!) Now that it has mellowed a little I will carve away the bulk material and form the handle - I can shape the most of the outside on the lathe as well as create a crisp rim and hollow but the handle and surrounding area must be carved with a knife. It's extra special to me as it was forged by craftsmen of bygone quality in the fields of Edale at Spoonfest itself. So impressive to watch Josh @j.l.burrell_toolmaker, the human power hammer Tim @thefootofiron and James @jameswoodmakerofthings bringing things to life at the forge over the weekend, transforming a simple steel billet into a hardened and tempered useful thing with simple tools and ancient knowledge. This beauty is one of Josh's designs and weighs in at 450g and I can't wait to put it to work.
