#repost • @foodtipz Also check @detox_recipes . PERSONAL STORY • Have you ever felt like you should ban all “junk foods” to reach a desired weight? Well this was once me (Alex speaking)... After finishing high school in 2008, I embarked on a gap year in the UK and without my mum's healthy home-cooking, I ate whatever I wanted. I was partying (a lot) and much less active (aka I did no exercise). However, I had the time of my life... until I returned home to my normal life 15kgs heavier. In a bid to lose weight, I started to become more conscious of the food I was putting into my body and this is when the food guilt started. At the same time, my social media was filled with ideas around what we should or shouldn't be eating so it was really easy to start banning things like chocolate and feeling incredibly guilty if I ate it. The trouble was, the more I restricted these foods, the more I craved them. It was obvious this strategy wasn't working for me. In 2010 I started my Dietetics degree and throughout this 5 year course I really came to understand just how important nutrition is and the role food plays in my life. I loved the science behind how food impacts our physical and mental health. After working as a dietitian for 5 years, I have learnt what approach to eating works best for me, and this tends to resonate with many of our clients too... the 90/10 philosophy... 90% of the time, I focus on eating good quality wholefoods (lean protein, whole grain carbs, fruit, veg and dairy). And 10% (or maybe closer to 20%) of the time I enjoy foods that I love but that don't necessarily provide my body with nutrients. My favs are chocolate & pizza!🍫🍕 .
