Also, connectivity among sloughs, marsh plains, and uplands supports rearing conditions for fish, says 2016 Fellow Denise Colombano. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ☀️ Understanding the exchange of CO2, methane, and energy in Delta #ecosystems will help California prioritize #climatesolutions and #carbonsequestration strategies, says 2016 Fellow Kyle Hemes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌿 I uncovered a negative relationship between invasive #pepperweed and saltier water from the 2012-15 #drought. Managers can use this info to increase effectiveness of controls, says 2013 Fellow Rachel Wigginton. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🕸️ Through analyzing #zooplankton gut content, my work can be used to shed light on lower #foodweb dynamics and inform #restoration efforts for native fish in the Delta, says 2016 Fellow Jennifer Harfmann. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👂 Data collected on Longfin smelt life history using #otoliths (#fish ear bones) and #isotope #chemistry will inform ongoing Delta #conservation and management efforts, says 2018 #Postdoc Fellow Levi Lewis. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🐟 I examine how predators affect juvenile #salmon migration. #DYK that flooded rice fields provide excellent habitat for fish that are migrating through the #sacdelta? Why? Because they have lots of bugs... Welcome to another #sciencefriday takeover with me, California Sea Grant State Fellow @ladyecologist! 👩‍🔬 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm excited to have a very special guest joining me today! Are you ready for a glimpse at a #dayinthelife of Delta Lead Scientist Dr. John Callaway? (I know am!) 🙋‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📨 Lead scientists, they're just like us! Yep, you guessed it... Dr. Callaway kicks off his workday by catching up on e-mails! Next, he reviews his schedule before it's time to get down to business. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📄 In his role overseeing the Delta Science Program, Dr. Callaway keeps busy making the rounds to support staff work and joining meetings. His projects cover Delta science funding, habitat #restoration, #socialscience integration, and more! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🍎 With such a busy schedule, Dr. Callaway has mastered the art #multitasking. Well hello there! California Sea Grant State Fellow @ladyecologist here for another #sciencefriday #takeover. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #ICYMI Wednesday was #worldwatermonitoringday, so I thought I'd break down why and how #cawater scientists continually monitor the #sacdelta. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In support of chapter 6 of the Delta Plan, @cadepartmentofwaterresources' Environmental Monitoring Program leads routine efforts that include tracking physical, chemical and biological characteristics of water. Equipment ranges from high tech tools to simple pieces of plastic! 💻➡️🧪 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Physical characteristics of water measured include: 🌡️ Temperature 🌈 Color ☀️ Light 🏁 Turbidity #Turbidity, or clarity, is monitored using a #secchi disc. How turbid or clear the water is... Is measured by the depth at which the disc is visible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Chemical characteristics of water measured include: ⚗️ Dissolved oxygen (DO) 🍋 Acidity (pH) 🧂 #Salinity 🧫 #Nutrients ☣️ Contaminants Just like us, aquatic life needs oxygen to survive. DO measurements tell scientists a lot about ecosystem health. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Biological characteristics of water measured include: 🦠 Bacteria 🧪 #Algae 🌿 Plant matter Bacteria measurements indicate a water body's safety for human/pet use. Algae measurements determine food availability at the base of the food web. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Through consistent water monitoring, scientists can determine environmental safety concerns, and predict how #ecosystems may change under certain conditions.
