Our most recent news story features radio personality Howard Sattler. Sattler is terminally ill with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). He plans to be one of the first Western Australians to use the state's VAD law when it comes into effect later this year. "I want to bow out gently, with dignity." We spoke to Howard Sattler in 2019 for our documentary The Broken Hearted. This is a short from it. People describe this as a bastard disease and I wholeheartedly agree. Utterly heartless and wretched, in fact. I am terminally ill with Motor Neurone Disease (ALS) and am being physically eaten away as I approach my death. I have always been a staunch supporter of assisted dying – even more so since my MND diagnosis. Here are my reasons why. No rewards. Because I have lost my ability to do anything, even the smallest of tasks most take for granted, I can’t enjoy simple pleasures. Living like this there are no rewards, no ‘retirement’ for having worked hard all my life as every day feels like more hard work. No meaning. Having to bid farewell, one by one, to each activity as they are no longer available to me, is soul destroying. Although I do my best to keep myself engaged, I’m left watching time tick by with every day a boring replica of the last. No benefits. MND is irreversible and always terminal. I’ve watched my body fail and can feel my mind failing. The disease, and the side effects of the medication create an ever-worsening existence as I watch myself disintegrate. Death is the only light at the end of the tunnel. Pain. I experience non-stop, ever increasing, mind crushing pain. People seem to think that MND doesn’t come with pain but no matter how much medication I am on, I have pain in all parts of my body. Family suffering. The loss of all dignity as I become unable to do even the most basic body functions not only affects me but my family and friends who have to witness my decline. I try to protect them from my own emotional anguish, but I can’t protect them from their own. My greatest hope is that people in New South Wales will see the sense in voluntary assisted dying and help so many people put an end to their needless suffering. I know that if I am still here, I will be the first in line. #VAD #VoluntaryAssistedDying #ALS #MND #motorneuronedisease #AssistedDying #AssistedDeath #YourChoice #Choice #EndOfLife #EndOfLifeCare #MyLifeMyChoice #DeathWithDignity #TerminalIllness #Euthanasia #Victoria #VictoriaVAD #VADVictoria #Health #Australia #HumanRights #HumanRightsAustralia #YourLifeYourChoice #FreedomOfChoice

NSW could become the final Australian state to consider a voluntary assisted dying (VAD) bill in 2021, after Independent MP Alex Greenwich announced a timeline to introduce legislation to parliament. NSW joins Tasmania, Queensland and South Australia in debating the issue in 2021. Victoria and Western Australia have already passed the laws. The Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill has received significant support in Tasmania's House of Assembly, with MPs voting 17 to seven to send the Bill to its next stage This vote is the best indication yet that Tasmania is set to become the third Australian state to legalise voluntary assisted dying. No other VAD Bill has made it so far in Tasmania's parliament. Congratulations to MLC Mike Gaffney, Your Choice TAS founders Jacqui and Natalie Gray and Dying with Dignity Tasmania for their incredible work to get the Bill this far. - For the full story, head to gogentleaustralia.org.au/newsroom or via the link in our bio. - If you're in Tasmania, contact your Lower House MPs now!
