Freshly baked Orange & Cardamom Muffins coming in nice and warm to your inbox tomorrow morning [if youâre subscribed to the community that is]. These muffins are gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free & nut free [so perfect for school lunchboxes]. Iâm about to talk about something a little controversial but Iâd be grateful if you bare with me. I know there is a lot of âhealth expertsâ [read: influencers who think theyâre health experts đ] out there who are on the body positivity bandwagon who talk about how there is no âbad foodâ and that all food should be enjoyed without guilt. As a nutritionist I find this so incredibly frustrating because, actually, there is bad food. There are foods that have zero health benefits, are packed with trans fats and refined sugars, artificial colours, flavours and preservatives. I am very on board with being positive about the body that we have. But we still have to look after that beautiful body of ours by choosing foods that nourish and not foods that feed disease. Yes, eat that piece of cake without regret. But eat it in moderation. Yes, feel good about that delicious takeaway that you ordered. But make it a once a week thing and not an everyday thing. Fill your bodies with all of the plants, choose lean meats/proteins, avoid refined sugars most of the time and choose whole grains over refined grains. Choose water instead of soft drink. Exercise often and rest when you need to. These messages of âeat what you like without guilt because all bodies are beautifulâ cause so much damn confusion to so many. My biggest piece of advice - choose wisely who you take your advice from. Are they qualified with a bachelors degree in health? Excellent! Did they study nutritional medicine? Even better. Just because someone positions themselves as an expert doesnât mean they actually are.
