  • Little did I know my last creative workshop in March would be the last one for this year and possibly next year. I miss teaching calligraphy and watercolor so much. Seeing that spark in my students’ eyes when they calligraphed for the first time or painted a satisfying watercolor blend was amazing! Although I’m not teaching adults art, I’m still able to educate people about the intricacies of art and the magic one can create with simple tools! They just happen to be about a third of my age and are 100 times cooler/sassier than I’ll ever be 😂 What has been a silver lining during this confusing time for you?

  • I’ve been pretty silent on my social media platforms for various reasons, and one of them is personally feeling weird about posting. However, I know that we must keep moving forward, and I hope it’s toward a brighter future for everyone. We must do our part to help those around us in any way we can. Help doesn’t just look like protesting, but it can be signing petitions and donating money. It can be handing out food in your local community or standing up to people on social media or wearing a mask. I came across this beautiful memorial near Williamsburg on New Years, and it really spoke to me and brought tears to my eyes. There are a lot of injustices happening everyday, but what you do—no matter how little or big—can make a difference. I hope you’re taking care of yourself 💕 35mm photo taken by me; film processed by @lusterphotolab

  • I’ve been thinking a lot about my business, which has been slow since the beginning of this year. Then, Covid happened and the curtain over injustices of the world was yanked back even more. Also, friendly reminder that #Blacklivesmatter is still happening and isn’t disappearing!

I’m hopping on today to let you know that even though you might feel like you’re failing, maybe this is the perfect time to reflect on the wins in your life and business. Think about what you’ve accomplished. And, if you don’t want to, that’s okay too! Don’t think you HAVE to learn a new skill or dive deep into an old one. Give yourself grace and time to rest. Our minds are going through a cycle of unfamiliarity and it’s very draining. Take time to grieve over your past life because we aren’t ever going back, but we do need to move forward. This pandemic looks different for everyone and I just hope you are all taking preventative measures like social distancing, wearing masks, and washing your hands. If you’re tired of the uncertainty, it’s going to continue as long as we don’t take action in reducing Covid—19 cases. Stay safe and take care of yourself 💕 Venue: @gatheratfarmhouse

  • There are times people come into your life when you need it the most. This time it was this little girl. Meet Daisy, named after one of my favorite flowers when I was younger! I’m grateful to have her and the joy that she’s brought me 🥰 She’s almost full dachshund and about seven months old. She currently doesn’t have a middle name. Do you have any suggestions? If not, let me know what your pet’s name is! 💕 (PS choosing a name is so difficult!)

  • When I came across my old sketchbooks from college, I was so underwhelmed with the content. It was all over the place, and I haven’t really sketched recreationally in years. This is something I wanted to change so I bought a few sketchbooks and gathered my supplies. To help with accountability and document the process, I decided to live stream everything 😨 This has been such a fun experience where not only can I show you how I paint (with unedited mistakes) but also interact with you. Here are several of the pieces I’ve watercolor painted so far, and you can catch the live-streams now at @imsarahbarrett! I hope to see you over there as I continue working on my sketchbook habit 💕 Do you keep a sketchbook? - - -

  • Are our actions helping or hurting? I’ve seen specifically white people acknowledge their privilege. As an Asian American, I deal with racism but have piggybacked off of that white privilege. No one is innocent. Today, and everyday, we must acknowledge that #blacklivesmatter. It’s not just a hashtag. It’s not a trend. Being an ally is not the new shiny cool thing. Don’t forget this when elections come.

I’m seeing people “go on mute” in order to amplify black voices, but are you doing it for the right reasons? It looks like you’re able to make a post, forget for a week, and come back to “happy Instagram.” I’m not saying this is what you’re doing, so don’t come for me. The optics don’t look good. By doing this, your silence can be misconstrued for being complicit, and you’re forcing black people to carry this movement, again. Don’t you see that it’s traumatizing and many are tired and hurting? I pray during this time you’ll educate yourselves and have conversations with those around you if you do decide to “go mute.”

However, right now, and everyday forward, we need to use our voices to support black people and people of color. You may feel uncomfortable. Good. Growing was never meant to be easy. We all have so much learning and unlearning to do.

In regards to #blackouttuesday, “black screens don’t do anything for black lives.” - @israhirsi Sharing resources, signing petitions, donating money, contacting representatives, checking in on your friends, fighting for equality, standing up for people, using black-owned businesses, etc., help black people. If you do decide to post a black square, at least share resources with it. I’ve linked ways to help in my bio, and swipe through to see what the black out looks like and what it’s really doing. I know it looks like I’m condemning your efforts, and really... I’m glad people want to help. We just have to think if it’s actually helping. Stay safe, wash your hands, and be an ally—not just at face value. Graphic by @theprintedorchid
