• Most years during the month of May we celebrate achievements in our SMA community at the longstanding Marian Awards for Excellence Brunch. This event coincides with Mother’s Day and it is a wonderful gathering that brings together multiple generations of women—mothers and daughters alike. As we are unable to come together in celebration this year, we are taking a look back at the past 16 years of Marian Awards Brunches. Marissa received the Gold Medal as well as the following Awards:⁣ ⁣ Grand Award for Best Biological Science Project.⁣ ⁣ Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation cash award and certificate.⁣ ⁣ Exceldor Cooperative (Granny’s Poultry) cash award and certificate⁣ ⁣ Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium cash award and certificate, plus a research experience on a research vessel on Lake Winnipeg.⁣ ⁣ With Marissa’s ranking as a Top Project, she will represent Manitoba in the National Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa (virtual) from May 17 to 21.⁣ ⁣ Way to Hold High the Torch Marissa!   • Happy Asian Heritage Month! Across Canada the month of May has officially been recognized as Asian Heritage Month since May 2002. This month is an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about the many achievements and contributions of Canadians of Asian descent who, throughout our history, have done so much to make Canada the amazing country we share today.⁣ ⁣ The theme for Asian Heritage Month 2021 is, Recognition, Resilience, and Resolve. This theme embodies the myriad of sentiments that peoples of Asian descent in Canada have experienced and honours their contributions and their diverse stories. It is also a call to action for all Canadians to come together to combat all forms of anti-Asian racism and discrimination.⁣ ⁣ At SMA, a group of students came together to honour and celebrate Asian Heritage Month with week long themes throughout the month, as follows:⁣ 𝗪𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐨𝐧𝐞 - 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲⁣ Students will learn about significant Asian individuals and historical Asian events.⁣ ⁣ 𝗪𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐭𝐰𝐨 – 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞⁣ Students will explore the literary works of various Asian authors.⁣ ⁣ 𝗪𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 – 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐭⁣ Student created artwork highlighting Asian culture will be on display throughout the school.⁣ ⁣ 𝗪𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 – 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞⁣ Playlists featuring Asian artists will be available, Asian music will play over the school PA in the morning and student performances will be privately shared on YouTube.⁣ ⁣ SMA thanks our Asian Heritage Month committee for their dedicated efforts to shine a light on Asian culture.   • On April 26, our grade 9 student, Marissa M was awarded first place and a cash award in the Sanofi Biogenius Canada Regional science competition. Sanofi Canada is part of a global pharmaceutical organization which funds and promotes a science competition and a youth science innovation summit in Canada annually. Marissa won this first place showing through successful participation in a virtual science fair and a rigorous evaluation process with an online panel of judges, in which she showcased a summary poster, project report, data journal and a summary video highlighting her sustainability project. Marissa began her project back in January, to understand which conditions such as heat, light and humidity would create the optimal conditions for mealworm larvae to consume polystyrene, more commonly known as styrofoam. Because of their unique gut bacteria, mealworms under the ideal conditions will eat more styrofoam and, therefore, more effectively recycle styrofoam in a safe, sustainable and biological method. The project outcome found that higher humidity is a key variable for mealworms to consume this common landfill waste material. Marissa’s first place win has put her in the Top 8 science projects in the National Finals of the Sanofi Biogenius Canada science competition. She also submitted her project this Spring to the Manitoba Schools Science Symposium (MSSS) which will be announcing their science fair results this coming weekend. Additionally, as a highly rated submission to MSSS, Marissa has been invited to represent Manitoba in the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa (virtual) from May 17 to 21 to compete among other science projects across the country.
