• Have you ever made an investment in your business that didn't quite pay off? Been there. Man, it's frustrating, isn't it? Here are 5 super practical questions to ask yourself before your next investment to avoid future investment regret.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Do I have the time?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We're all guilty of it, we purchase that must have course and then never finish it. Before you invest, make sure you have time to actually do the work right now or very soon, don't buy now with hopes to do it later.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Do I have the cash?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If the answer is no, most of the time it's better to wait. If you choose not to wait and you're going to go into debt, you need to make sure you are REALLY confident that you can make that money up quickly. I think we're usually better off being disciplined and only spending the cash we have. This makes us feel better about the investments we make because we're thoughtfully choosing to spend money we have on something rather than purchasing because of a false sense of urgency.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Will the investment get me closer to my big goal?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Make sure the investment you're making is actually based on where you want to be in your business and life. Anything you invest in should be helping you reach your next big goal, not just the most trendy industry topic.

4. Do I connect with the philosophy and approach to business/life of the person who's offering the investment?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You need to make sure that the person offering the investment is a good fit for you. You don't want to be putting time and money into someone when you ultimately aren't going to agree or resonate with their approach.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. What are others saying about this investment?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Social proof is the best proof. Read reviews to see what others are saying about the investment to help decide if it will be worth it! 👏🏼

  • I think I’m addicted to being wanted/needed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Oof. Kinda hurts to write that a little bit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I say addicted because it takes work to say “enough” because it’s our tendency to just always want more, more more! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have a feeling it’s something you might need to hear too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why do you think it’s so hard to turn off notifications or to close your email tab throughout the day so you can focus? Why do we constantly open Instagram to see if we’ve gotten any more likes or tap our insta DMs to see if there are any message requests? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because we just so desperately want to be wanted. We want to be needed. We want to be valued. We want to know we’re worthy. We fear rejection. We fear failure. We assume minimal interaction/vanity metrics = failure. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ohhh do we fear failure. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s just a lot. But let me leave you with this... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You. Are. Inherently. Worthy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nothing you could ever do would make you more or less inherently worthy. I encourage a lot on these squares and I share little bits of my faith here and there, but today I just want to be clear, no beating around the bush. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The truth is, I believe all that to my core because that is what my good God says about you. That He created you in HIS image - at the core of your being, you are bearing the image of God which makes you so beautiful, so important, so valuable, SO. WORTHY. Walk tall in that today, lovely, because it’s true. ♥️

  • When it comes to finances, we talk a lot about expenses in business, saving for taxes, and paying ourselves, but we don't talk enough about SAVING for our business.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've been using the Profit First Method (more on that coming to the blog soon) and building up my business savings account for awhile now. That money has allowed me to have a 3 + 4 month maternity leave without financial stress, even when the second baby was a surprise! That's the power of a Business Emergency Fund. Your Business Emergency Fund is money that you're setting aside just in case there's an emergency and you can't work. Setting aside savings specifically for your business can give you so much freedom and peace of mind. It may not seem very fun, but when stuff hits the fan, it's worth it!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So how do you get started? Make it a planned part of your monthly business expenses. Every month, add a category/set amount to your budget that's designated for savings. OR make sure your monthly overhead is less than what you're bringing into the business (profit), that way any excess can be moved to your savings at the end of each month (although I will tell you that saving FIRST is the most surefire way to make sure you’re actually saving!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When saving, it's also helpful to have a goal in mind. I recommend breaking up your savings goal into smaller, more realistic checkpoints:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Save 1 month of your business overhead expenses.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Save 3 months of your business overhead expenses.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Save 6 months of your business overhead expenses.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We also need to be thinking ahead and saving for bigger projects or investments that we want to make. For example, let's say you want to redo your website. You should be intentionally planning and saving instead of hoping that you'll eventually be able to afford it. Don’t just hope... Do!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Start intentionally saving, friend. Your future self will thank you!

  • They’re starting to play together more and I love it 😊️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just really grateful for our girls today and for the life we’ve built with a high priority on what will matter most decades down the road.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s still messy. It’s not perfect. But there’s been progress and I want that for you too, friend.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What do you want to hear more about from me? How do you need help?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know people rarely answer questions on posts but this is real, pal. Help me help you. That's really, truly what my heart wants...to help. Because I believe we were meant for this. 😘

  • Hey friend, how are you?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How are things really going? Have you kept up with your resolutions or fallen back into old habits? Have you made progress toward your big goals? Are you feeling down on yourself about the way the year has started?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I feel you. Sadly 2021 wasn’t a reset button and it’s probably not how you hoped it would be.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’ve fallen behind or you're feeling discouraged, you’re not alone, friend. It's so easy for us to look at others and see their "progress" in these little squares.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is your friendly reminder to stop looking at others, stop comparing yourself, and to give yourself some grace. The images you see when you scroll are the highlight reel. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Real talk, I was supposed to post this post like a week ago. I didn’t end up sending out my weekly email the past TWO weeks. I’m a little behind on my primary big goal for this quarter.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But you know what? Today is a new day. This is a new week. And I’m moving forward and letting go of my “failures” and remembering that I made decisions that I stand by still. I chose family. I chose friends. I also took on too much. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I could choose to sit in my guilty conscience. I could be embarrassed as a coach to reveal my failures. But you don’t want a perfect leader. You want a real one.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So today let's focus less on being perfect. Let's spend less time comparing ourselves to others and more time believing in ourselves.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
No matter your failure, don’t let it make you give up. Let it go and take one step forward. Because I believe in you. Because the world needs you to be who you were meant to be. ♥️

  • If my girls end up like me...will I be grateful for the choices I’ve made or will I have regrets?

It’s a sucker punch gut check, but it’s one I need to let sink in.

What do I hope they catch onto?

Not the time spent at the computer, but the time spent working hard to help others live a life of flourishing.

Not the tidiness or cleanliness of our home, but our commitment to stewarding our resources with discipline.

Not merely the fact that we have a weekly date night, but the way we (imperfectly) try to prioritize our marriage relationship.

Not the times we have a conflict-free day, but the times we need to humbly apologize to them when we’re wrong (had to do this for the first time recently 🥴)

Not the fact that we go to bed at 7:00 every night, but how we pray and worship God with a song together before we say goodnight.

Parenthood is a lot. It requires a lot of thought and a lot a LOT of grace for everyone involved and I’m so grateful that the grace we receive in the (messy) process is unending.

What do you want your kids to remember?

  • 🗣 You need a tax accountant! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let me say it again for the people in the back... You. Need. a Tax Account! 👏🏼👏🏼 And if you don't think you can afford it, the reality is that you really can't afford NOT to hire one. I learned this the hard way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I first started my photography business, I thought I could handle taxes on my own. Unfortunately, I made some mistakes and ended up owing THOUSANDS. That expense was the wakeup call I needed to hire a professional.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I finally hired a tax accountant, they found an error in the way I was filing and I ended up getting THOUSANDS back. And today, my tax accountant continues to help me make the most of my income and keeps tax time stress free! Totally worth the investment! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tax forms, write offs, when to file, what to file, etc. change all. the. time. Make your life easier and hire a professional (btw, a real person, not an online filing app). Tax accountants stay up to date with these changes so you don't have to. You just can't (and shouldn't!) know everything.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you don't feel like you can afford a tax accountant, I'm here to tell you that you actually can! You just have to work the price of a tax accountant into your overhead business expenses, which should be covered by your pricing. No idea how to do that? Head to my new pricing blog post for the deets! ♥️

  • I’m going to let you in on a super embarrassing part of my business journey. Something that makes my stomach turn and my face flush. 🥴 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This part of my story is a big part of my heart and mission to help creative entrepreneurs like yourself avoid the mistakes I made early on.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I worked a full-time job right out of college for 3 years, where I started with an annual salary of $40K. I was also working my side-hustle at the time. This was the most money I’d ever had flowing through my hands, but now? Financially, I have nothing to show for that time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I was in a constant cycle of money-stress, wondering how I was going to cover costs, blaming my lack of natural number prowess and crying over seemingly impossible dreams of going full time in my business. I was constantly wondering HOW do people do this?!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I didn’t know my numbers at any given time. I didn’t save for taxes. I did my taxes wrong. I didn’t save for upcoming expenses. I didn’t plan well and I spent way. too. much. I obviously NEEDED that beautiful $100 floral camera strap, right? 😬⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The hard truth is that this part of my story was my fault and completely avoidable. Ultimately, I believe my financial irresponsibility is what kept me from going full time in my photography business sooner and I'm betting you’ve experienced something similar.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My approach to pricing is different than most and it starts with your life. Base your pricing on your life, not just on the pricing of your competitors.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sure, we need to be aware of our market, but I believe we have all made a mistake by basing our pricing *solely* on the competition and then wondering how on earth people actually make a living doing this! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can’t make a living picking a random number for your pricing. You need to base your pricing on facts, starting with your personal budget needs, aka: your salary. 👏🏼

  • I'm a coach and I decided not to set a word of the year or a big, fancy goal for all of 2021. 🤭 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yep! It's true! Here's why.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I had a BIG goal in 2020 to launch a group coaching program. (oh and I had a baby too lol 😅) That was a BIG project and it took a LOT of energy that I'm honestly still recovering from a bit. This past Fall was a lot for me. I didn't do it perfectly and I hope to never do it that way again. But I learned SO dang much from it that I'm *kind of* grateful for that season.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But wow am I glad it was just a short season.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So now, instead of doubling down on another big goal this year, my focus is to serve my clients REALLY well and to have all of my group coaching content done by April 1st.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So every single week I'm working on that content and working hard to get me to that goal. That goal, although small and not very sexy, gets me closer to some longer term goals because it's a stepping stone. That goal is in alignment with my long term plans.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every single week you should prioritize time to work toward your next big goal and you should make sure that goal aligns with your long term vision.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After all, a goal is nothing without action and sideways energy isn't doing you any favors. 👏🏼

  • For some reason it's been extra hard to leave my babies lately. Alea is starting to struggle a bit more with big emotions and obedience while Ivy popped two teeth in the last week, making her a little more fussy than normal.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This morning Alea just wanted me to sit with her and read to her and it was just so hard to walk out the door.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know my work is important, but man sometimes it's hard.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fellow Mamas, any and all encouragement is welcome 🥴♥️
