From the 1930s to the 1990, Western New England had Greek fraternities and sororities! Students could join as part of their extracurricular activities as fraternities and sororities were responsible for activities like formal dances and sporting events. Here are some facts about WNE’s Greek life: • The first fraternal group was Epsilon Phi Sigma, which was established in 1927 by a group of 25 Springfield-Northeastern students. • In 1951, there was a realignment of chapters from Springfield-Northeastern to Western New England College. • During the 1970s, fraternities were pitted against one another in events including softball games, pie eating contests, track events, egg toss competitions, and arm wrestling. • At the end of the 1970s, there were seven social fraternities and sororities, two academic Greek organizations, and the Interfraternity and Sorority Council on campus. Fraternities and sororities faded in popularity in the 1990s and the last Greek organizations disbanded in 1995. #TriviaTuesday #WNE100
