This post has stuck out to me prominently during these times, and I keep revisiting it. Never have I seen a clearer explanation of one of the most essential skills as an event professional. READ THE ROOM. Most of the time we’re naturally in our element at events, and we just do it, but it is such an important and teachable skill that you can bring into everyday life. Thanks to @honeyandvinyl for sharing. 🖤 ・・・ As a bandleader, the most important part of my job is to listen. I must listen to my musicians as they play to manage their volume. I must pay special attention to the nuances of an event and respond to musically match the moment. I refer to it as reading the room. This skill is what makes me damn good at my job. And what I love most, is that it’s a teachable skill. To my White + non-Black POC Event Industry Pros—I’m saddened by your choice to go on IG Live this week to speak solely about Covid, what you had for breakfast, blah blah blah with no mention of the current unrest that is plaguing our country. I understand the need to busy oneself, or the desire to offer an escape from the ugliness. But it’s reading as utter disregard + is a reflection of your privilege which is a major part of the problem. I personally would prefer your silence to you pretending that nothing is happening. At the very least, if you must talk about the industry right now, go Live + dialogue with a Black event pro to help promote diversity. Consider taking a moment to exercise empathy. But know that going Live to share your favorite wedding trend is not the move right now. Read The Room. And for those asking what can you do to help, you can start by having dialogue with tone deaf friends who just don’t understand. Sidebar: I have no interest in going Live, but am happy to suggest Black event vendors who may have interest. . . . #ReadTheRoom #eventplanner #weddingplanner #weddingplanners #eventprofs #igdaily #iglive #blacklivesmatter

Let's be real! Live, in person, events are a prime catalyst for driving connections, building relationships, and social human interaction. I miss live events. I am a natural planner, love my job, and am damn good at it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Recently, I've had plenty of conversations with other event industry professionals about why we miss live events, and how we can't wait to get back to it in some form or fashion. I will plan my dog's birthday party at this point for all I care. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Over on the @eventumbrellapodcast, I talk more specifics on the main reasons I miss planning events. I want to know what do you miss about your job that has been affected by this vast change? Do you wonder why you feel exhausted after a day of virtual calls? Is it webinar fatigue, digital burnout? The explosion of virtual software use, in response to the pandemic, has launched an unofficial social experiment showcasing virtual interactions can be extremely hard on the brain.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since humans evolved as social animals, perceiving non-verbal in person cues comes naturally to most of us. It takes little conscious effort; however, a typical video call impairs these ingrained abilities, and requires sustained attention. Your brain is trying, and often failing, to multi-task therefore generating mental exhaustion.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In spite of this, it still allows for some sense of togetherness, but cannot replace an in person connection as humans are natural social beings. If you’re quarantine fatigued like us, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and we’re doing our best to see you again at events! Failure is normal people. Even if you don't want to talk about it. It's hard, yes, but it only helps you grow that much more in whatever aspect of your life, whether professional or personal. Especially during times where so much is demanded from us at home, at work, from family , from friends, it's easy to fail.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In one area or another you will fail, and that's OK. A commonality between a lot of us right now is the pressure to show up for everyone, and you know what? That's just not possible, not effectively anyway. So, don't be afraid of it. Own up to it and do your damn best queen! 🖤👑⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #girlslifteachotherup #forqueensonly #herglobal #girlbossinspo #damescollective #womanrising #oprahquotes #bossbabequotes #motivatedwomen #austineventplanner

What strange times we're living in, am I right? Normally, we'd be thick in the planning phase now through the summer time for our heavy fall event season, but instead there are still many unknowns, and we have backup plan on backup plan on backup plan.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The truth is we still don't exactly know how or when events will come back, although some countries are slowly reopening them, we can make our best predictions for how they may look (virtual/hybrid, etc.) What we do know is the industry is forever changed, and that our normal planning routine shifts with the times.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So when your career or professional skill set is challenged to the core, use it to your advantage. Take the opportunity to learn what you can and become the expert!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #girlbossmindset #femaleentrepreneurs #smallbusinessleaders #austineventplanner #womenofaustin #thisgirlmeansbusiness

Well y'all this past month has pretty much come and gone. April was our first official full month of quarantine, working from home, and homeschooling. It was not easy. Mixed with times of stress, self-care, reflection, and overwhelm, it was a unique time to navigate in our lives. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, with the support of our family and friends, we've made it through. Now it's time to do what we do best. PLAN. Planning for the future, for what this new normal will look like, for change, growth, and opportunities. Planning is our expertise, and this time will be no different. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So if you're in a juggling state between stress and trying to somewhat take a break in the middle of all the chaos, make a plan, choose grace and have a drink for goodness sake! . . . #austinwomen #girlbossinspo #leadwithhappy #girlbossmindset #womenofaustin #womanrising
