It’s December 25, 2015 and I’m in a wheel chair, desperately trying to leave the hospital. Wyatt was born four days prior and the only thing I wanted for Christmas was to bring my sweet boy home. The mama in this photograph came to the hospital on Christmas day. She and her camera stayed with us for two hours while we fought through the interminable red tape of getting discharged. She watched me cry as I tried, over and over, to climb into our SUV to go home, post c-section. She documented us as we crossed the threshold into our home for the first time as a trio. She captured the first licks Wyatt ever got from his big bro Mo. The first moments on our own as parents, our first Christmas morning together, the first day of the rest of our lives, immortalized by @kieraslye. I will never ever forget that gift. I have this problem almost every night. My sweet boy finishes his nightly cleansing ritual and emerges warm, clean and happy. “Mommy, let’s watch a movie on your bed!” I can’t say no. Even though I’ve seen “Sing” at least 32 times in the last month, I can’t resist the temptation of his soft cheek against my shoulder for a whole 89 minutes. We settle into the pillows and sheets. I smell his head, and whisper “I love you” more times than I can count. I think of Monday’s massive to-do list that I could be getting ahead on. But I make the decision that this is more important. These are not choices that I ever thought I would make in my life, but I am so happy that I do. It’s an honor to be his mom. And I know I’ll never regret it, not even once.
