IMPORTANT - Bus Eireann School Transport for School Year 26-27
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The Department of Education and the School Transport Office have asked to pass on this message to you.
This is a reminder to parents and guardians of the deadline of Friday, 8 May 2026 for payment, registration and to enter medical card details for the School Transport Scheme for the 2026/2027 school year.
Who needs to apply?
Applications are required for students who are new to the scheme, starting junior infants or first year, changing school or address.
Families who have previously applied do not need to reapply unless details have changed, but must log-in to complete payment or submit medical card details.
In order to fully integrate all pupils using mainstream school transport, all pupils who have arrived in Ireland from Ukraine and all pupils residing in IPAS/EROC centres are required to apply for mainstream school transport by the deadline date of 8 May also. This will mean that all families, living in accommodation centres, IPAS centres, modular homes, with host families, and living independently, should now apply on the Bus Éireann family portal.
School transport continues to be free of charge for all eligible families with a medical card who apply and enter details by the closing date. It is important that new applications are received as soon as possible for students who are new to the scheme for children with special educational needs (SEN), starting junior infants or first year, changing school or address.
Parents should be advised that late applications or payments may result in a ticket not being available, and that late applicants will not be considered for the Remote Area Grant for the 2026/2027 school year.
Further information on how to apply and fees are available here.

Nominations for Mayors Awards
A huge well done to TY student Saoirse Wade and 3rd year student Molly Mahon, who have been shortlisted for a Mayor’s Award, with the winners being announced tomorrow night.
Even being nominated is a fantastic achievement, and it is wonderful to see their dedication recognised.
Saoirse and Molly are two of four young volunteers from Liam Mellows Hurling and Camogie Club (alongside Áine Kelly and Sophie Corbett) nominated for the Junior Volunteer of the Year Award. Through their coaching, refereeing, and commitment to promoting hurling and camogie, they give an incredible amount of time and energy to their club and community.
Molly coaches the U8 and U9 Camogie teams, referees matches, and serves as a role model to younger girls and boys in the club through her skill, dedication, and sportsmanship. She also represents Galway on the field, showing younger players what can be achieved through hard work and passion. Saoirse coaches the tots, assist with the U8 boys, and referee, ensuring the youngest members of the club have fun while learning the sport. All four of the girls also play for the under-16 team, balancing their own commitments while giving back to the club.
Their contribution goes far beyond the pitch, helping with GoGames, Cúl Camps, and club events, and making a real difference to young players across Galway City.
We are very proud of Saoirse and Molly and wish them the very best of luck on the night.

Upcoming Visit: Past Pupil Chloe Lawlor (Exoplanet Discovery)
We’re looking forward to welcoming Chloe Lawlor back to Dominican College, next week on Friday, May 1st!
You may have seen the recent news about Chloe leading the discovery of a new exoplanet, WISPIT 2c, while completing her PhD at @universityofgalway.
Chloe will be visiting us to chat with current students about her research, her career path, and what it’s like to find a new world 430 light-years away.
It’s a great chance for our students to see where a passion for STEM can lead.

Bin it, don’t ditch it! 🚮
Our Green Schools Committee are taking action to tackle litter and keep our school looking its best 🌱
They’re launching a Hallway Clean-Up Challenge, where each year group can earn points for keeping their areas, corridors and locker spaces clean and tidy. The cleaner the space, the more points you earn… and there’s a treat for the winning year group 👀
Keep an eye on the school TV screens for full details on how the challenge works and to check the weekly rankings.
Let’s all do our part — every small action makes a big difference 💚

A lovely day of celebration at our TY & Active Retirement Graduation Party 🎉
Over the past number of months, our TY students were partnered with members of the Galway Active Retirement Association as part of an intergenerational programme. The girls helped the retirees with technology skills, while also gaining so much from their life experience, stories and wisdom.
The graduation party last month was a wonderful way to celebrate the friendships formed and the learning shared along the way. A fantastic experience for everyone involved

Our TY students recently visited Fidelity Investments as part of the CodePlus programme, which encourages more girls to explore careers in computer science and STEM 💻
CodePlus is facilitated by Sally McHugh and funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The programme is delivered by University of Galway to help address the gender gap in the tech industry.
During their visit, the girls met graduates from the Fidelity graduate programme LEAP, learned about career pathways in STEM, and took part in team-building activities with the graduates.
A big thank you to Sally McHugh and the team at Fidelity Investments for hosting such an engaging and inspiring visit for our TY students 🚀

Our students in Room 3 have been busy over the past few weeks designing, planning and building their very own vegetable patch 🌱
From preparing the space to planting a variety of vegetables, the project has been a wonderful opportunity for teamwork, creativity and getting hands-on outdoors. A big thank you to the SNAs and teachers who helped and supported the students along the way.
Now the hard work is done and the vegetables are planted — we’re all looking forward to seeing what grows in the weeks and months ahead! 🥕🥬🌼
