Something simple and fun for your weekend 🤍 This kid loves bubbles so we got him a bubble machine! It takes a lot of bubble solution & we ran out after two uses so naturally I looked around the house to see what I could use to make more. Had some Johnson's baby shampoo (I actually don't use that on baby, just on makeup brushes) and glycerin and adapted the following recipe from @scienceworldca b u b b l e s o l u t i o n -1/2 cup water -1/2 cup Johnson's baby shampoo -1/4 tsp glycerin or 1 tsp corn syrup -mix well and let sit for 2 hrs Don't have a wand or bubble machine? Make one out of pipe cleaners or use a straw for tiny bubbles! You can also make bubble solutions with Dr. Bonner's castile soap (loads of recipes online). Just don't make the same mistake I did and use the peppermint kind. Not the best to get in your kid's eyes/mouth! Have a great weekend! Stay safe, wear a mask, and make smart choices💕 . . . . #summerishere #stayhome #zerowastebaby #zerowastekids #zerowasteactivities #bubbles #scienceisfun

Hey friends! I haven't posted in a long time. Long story short, my phone crapped out, there were some shipping mistakes made, and I didn't have a phone for 6 weeks. Horray for cheaply made electronics that are actually really expensive and not meant to last 😭. To be honest, I was frustrated at first, but a break from my phone came at a really good time. I've had my new (refurbished) phone for a week but I haven't really felt like posting. Between COVID-19 and a huge wake-up call that police brutality and systematic racism is alive and well, this platform has seemed less important. There are other fights I feel are worth fighting. I've felt a little lost navigating this Pandemic and the zero waste world and have been super hard on myself about the trash we've been creating as a family. I've felt like a fake. But trying to remind myself to adapt and give myself some slack. Moving forward, I want to not only bring awareness to climate change and other environmental emergencies, but to environmental injustice in communities of color. I've been educating myself more on the topic and will share what I can. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert, and I would love to have some open and honest conversations about it, striving to practice allyship along the way. For now, here's pretty much the only recent picture I have on my new phone. . . . . #peopleandplanet #environmentaljustice #climatechange #climateawareness #zerowaste #zerowastefamily #blacklivesmatter

Anyone else going through their cloth alternatives much faster than before this mess? More hand washing+ more cleaning = a lot more laundry. I typically run one load of towels a week but I've never gone through all of our hand towels like this and some weeks do more loads. This new pattern in my home makes me wonder about the demand for single-use cleaning products now. What's the environmental impact going to be? Have families fallen back on old, wasteful habits? I know we have in other ways. These are no doubt unprecedented times and we should be gentle on ourselves. But let's not forget that everything we do now will still have an impact on our precious planet. . . . #zerowastehome #zerowastecollective #zerowasteliving #lowwasteliving #lowwastehome #zerowasteswaps #unpapertowels #stopsingleuse

Fact: you can wear #secondhand clothes and STILL be fashionable, still feel pretty, still feel confident...whatever it is about clothes that make you feel good. It's the tail end of #fashionrevolutionweek and I want to help put an end to #fastfashion and normalize thrifting, swapping, and outfit repeating. I get it, I'm guilty of buying a new outfit just to wear once or going on a huge shopping spree after a stressful week. Only now (well not recently thanks to coronavirus) I visit thrift shops or online secondhand shops to get my fill. OR I simply resist the urge to buy anything at all; do some yoga, go for a walk, etc. The stats are SCARY folks. Modern slavery, tremendous amounts of waste and pollution...the list goes on. But we can change that! We can change our habits and do better. Much better. Pop on over to @fash_rev For more resources. What have you done lately to revolutionize fashion? Who makes your clothes? . . . . #stopfastfashion #peopleoverprofit #thriftedoutfit #sustainableclothing #sustainablefashion #whomademyclothes #whomakesyourclothes #zerowastecollective #zerowastelife #slowfashion #fashionrevolution #outfitrepeater

h a p p y * e a r t h * d a y🌏 Thinking back to all of the places I've visited and the Grand Canyon has got to be one of the most beautiful. Its vastness is overwhelming yet peaceful. Looking forward to when we can safely visit National Parks again. I hope recent events have brought a new appreciation to our planet with a willingness to protect it. For now, I'm learning to appreciate the beauty in my own backyard. What's the first place you want to visit when we are able to? . . . . #earthday #earthday2020 #nature #nationalparks #grandcanyon #noplanetb #motherearth #protectourplanet

No such thing as sustainable consumerism, but I can appreciate a more sustainable alternative to a product I need. Desperately needed a new phone case as mine was cracked almost in half (a cheap order from Amazon when I first got this phone). Things are not made to last but phone cases are essential to protecting your phone and keep it going longer. Finally caved on buying a new one. Enter @pelacase and their glorious cases made of compostable bioplastic elastomer (something that's flexible) and flax straw material. Their FAQs are transparent and you can read all about the materials used. When I no longer have a use for it I can put it in my city green bin to go to a commercial compost facility. The packaging was minimal and recyclable. You can even send your old case back to them for composting if you don't have access to a commercial facility that will take bioplastics or your own backyard compost. They're currently running a buy one case get one free sale, so if you're in need, check em' out! . . . #pelacase #notanad #sustainability #sustainableproducts #zerowasteproducts #zerowasteswaps #zerowastealternatives

I love science!👩🔬 Swipe ➡️ to see the before picture of these heavily tarnished silver cups and tray. I recently inherited these from my aunt and they originally belonged to my grandparents. You can also watch the ultra satisfying time lapse of the process. Excuse the baby babble (forgot to turn off volume lol). This is all thanks to an electrochemical reaction! When silver tarnishes, sulfur attaches to it's surface creating those black spots. The combo of aluminum, baking soda, and hot water transfer the sulfur from the silver to the aluminum through an electrolytic current. Leaving the silver behind. Worried about experimenting on a family heirloom? Actually, this method is safer than traditional silver polish since those will remove silver along with the sulfur. This is a way less harsh process and totally #zerowaste ! Just recycle the aluminum when done. M E T H O D *Place aluminum in bottom of bowl *Put silver item(s) on top of aluminum (has to touch) * Boil water then add baking soda (1 tbsp per quart of H2O) *Add mixture to bowl with silver (enough to cover it) * Let sit and watch tarnish ✨ disappear ✨ *Repeat for heavily tarnished silver *Dry and buff with a clean, microfiber cloth *Admire shining silver . . . #quarantineproject #science #chemistry #womeninscience #zerowastealternatives #zerowastecleaning #springcleaning #springclean #zerowasteliving #zerowastehome #zerowastegoals #zerowastecollective
