LeConte's Sparrow is among the shyest, most difficult sparrows to see in North America. I think its also the most beautiful. I was really lucky to get to spend some time with this territorial male at Round Lake NWR in the prairie-pothole ecosystem of far northeast Montana. There is currently a movement among amateur and professional ornithologists and birders to remove all honorific bird names and replace them with descriptive names that are less fraught and more informative. Many men (its always men) for whom birds are named have horrific histories of racism and/or more. I hereby nominate the name Golden Striped Sparrow to replace LeConte's. #birding #birdphotography #montana #montanamoment #wildlifephotography #bestbirds

Cactus bloom season is in full-swing on the prairie dog towns of @americanprairie! After much consideration I have decided that the spinystar, or viviparous foxtail cactus is my favorite plant on the Montana prairie. Just look at it! ♥️♥️♥️ @montananativeplantsociety

I'm sorry for your burden. I promise to only use the information to help out you and your friends. I gotta say, the ethics of research really get to me sometimes. Putting a tag on a bird isn't a trivial thing. It's a burden, and one they didn't ask for or consent to. It's my responsibility to make damn sure it was worth it. #migconnectivity #ornithology #montana #birdphotography #science
