    This week Year 6 are learning about microbes: viruses, bacteria and fungi.  Once we had learnt about them, we used our knowledge to design and make our own: some are good, some are bad and some are deadly!

    Redwood class have been channelling their inner 'cool' and are becoming great 'jazz cats'!

    We noodled to the groovy 'Bacharach Anorak' by Ian Gray, using improvisation techniques. Our glockenspiels and tambourines have never felt so 'swing' - Nice!

    This term, Year 6 are investigating why Christians see Jesus as the promised Messiah. They read an account of Jesus’ birth from Matthew’s Gospel looking for how Jesus fulfilled some of the expectations of the Messiah.
    Then they thought of questions they could ask Mary and Joseph about the events on the night Jesus was born and the prophecies/ expectations. They then had the opportunity to 'interview' Mary and Joseph in a hot seat activity to ask their questions.

    Lantern Workshops

    The dining hall was transformed into a lantern-making workshop last week! Mrs Jackson and her very helpful crew of volunteers helped the choir children create lanterns using white tissue paper, PVA glue and bamboo sticks.

    Come along to the lantern parade on Friday at 5:30pm to see them! Junior choir children will be leading the way and then singing in Southdown to celebrate the lights switch-on.

    In this lesson we investigated the effect gravity and upthrust can have on an object. We created different shape tin foil boats with different surface areas and tested which one could float with the most multi-link cubes in it!

    @schoolofkindness_

    Today we had a joy-filled visit from Greig from The School of Kindness. He spoke to us all about the power of kindness - how it can make others feel but also what it can do to your own wellbeing.

    The children enjoyed creating 'tokens of kindness' back in class and have really engaged so well with the idea of spreading kindness in our school and the wider community.

    Year 6 Maths

    Manipulatives are really useful. Sometimes we like to consolidate our knowledge and show our understanding in ways other than just writing them down. Using the 100 bead string was an excellent opportunity to show the correlation between fractions, decimals and percentages.

    In Art Year 5 have been studying the work of Frank Auerbach. We learnt different sketching techniques and how to draw different body parts in realistic and abstract ways using charcoal and graphite. Then the children created dark portraits of themselves inspired by Frank Auerbach.

    We are so impressed with the outcomes and hope you enjoy seeing some of them too!

    This half-term, Mr Nunes and Mr Welch are running a Just Dance club on a Friday. The children enjoy their very own personal disco where they can practise some funky dance moves. There are still some spaces in the club up until Christmas if you're interested!
