• Writing groups have begun. 📝 When I first introduce writing, I like to model in small groups, so all students have an opportunity to ask questions. It also allows me to monitor who is understanding, and who will need more scaffolding. I like to also introduce the TRACE cards and show them how this acronym can provide them with a guide when they start off.   • Today, we took a road trip around the U.S. visiting several National Parks. We had park rangers at each park share with us important information about the parks including where it’s located, cost of admission, hours of operation, lodging, attractions, activities visitors can participate in while they’re there, essential items visitors should take, and stunning images of their park. 📸 A couple of shirts from @burlingtonstyle for young rangers to wear, handmade trees, badges, a National Parks logo, a hat from @amazon and the stage was set for our presentations. 🤔 Inquiring minds want to know why some National Parks are FREE (so Thrifty 😉) while others have an admission price.   • This is a glimpse at dissecting writing for the first time. Bring out all the colors. 🌈 Last week, we read Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey and Saved by the Boats to discuss the events of September 11th and how boats were used to help people in several ways. 🚢 After planning and writing a paper (together), I copied one of the paragraphs we wrote together, and had students color code the writing. This helps them see all the components to an expository writing and how they are interweaved to make a well supported paragraph. There are always so many ah-ha moments when I introduce this activity. It shows them how “R.A.C.E.” is not a checklist where once you include one of the ‘letters,’ you check it off and move one. ✔️ Do you introduce a similar lesson or acronym to your students to help them navigate their writing? 🤓 #iteachfifth #iteachwriting

Students loved being able to drop everything and read “in the dark.” These cute little flashlights are so bright and easy to store. I found the set of 16 on Amazon. All week long we learned to ask “Who/What the sentence is about” to find the subject, then chopping the sentence. We moved at warp speed this year learning all about simple subjects and predicates and compound sentences and predicates all in one week! In all my years of doing this activity, this is the first year 100% of my students in one class received black belts during their class ceremony! To say I was astonished was an understatement. These kids are rocking it! I feel like the possibilities are endless this year, and I’m so excited to see what it will bring. If you’d like to replicate this activity, all you need is some black grosgrain ribbon and an assessment on subjects and predicates. I’ve usually only assessed complete and simple subjects and predicates, but took it further this year with compound subjects and predicates. The interactive games and activities engage the students while learning new skills. Today, while wrapping up our lessons on subjects and predicates, students played a connect 3 game with dice. The competition was fierce, the dice shaking was intense, and the excitement was .... awesome! Making learning fun doesn’t have to be a major production. Sometimes something small can have a last impression, and I’m here for it all. What’s one thing you’ve done at the start of the year to make learning fun and engaging?
