When you feel scared to do something—follow your dreams … take photos ... post on instagram ... reach out to a new client … try something scary and new … pursue your passion… Remember that it’s not about you, it never was about you … it’s about the people you can serve and help by doing what you love. That is truly everything. You have no idea how many lives you can and will impact with your photography if you just give yourself the chance. If you feel that calling in your heart to follow your dreams, know that it’s there for a reason, don’t ignore it. Let yourself shine the way you were meant to, you deserve it more than you know. Jump into that fear trusting and deeply knowing that something amazing is waiting for you on the other side of it. You are stronger than you think. 🤍🧡

The whole work / life balance thing is a myth… I used to put myself through so much suffering thinking I needed to lead a “balanced” life—but let’s be honest—balance isn’t real. And I don’t mean that in the sense that you can’t “do it all” (because you can), I mean it in the sense that you don’t have to have a “balanced” life to live a successful life. The way I like to think about it is, what does success look like to me? What do I value in life? And how can I make space for what matters in a way that feels good for me? Don’t let someone else tell you what a balanced life is, because “balance” doesn’t exist in the real world. Sometimes balance looks like editing till 2am for 4 days straight so you can take a week off to spend time with your family. Sometimes balances looks like updating your portfolio for months so you can land that dream client that allows you the financial security to quit your day job. Sometimes balance looks like hiring an assistant so you have some more free time. Sometimes balances looks like binge watching Netflix or taking a week of social media to center yourself. Life comes in waves—sometimes you’re stressed and overworked, and sometimes you’re not. Starting a photography business can require you to go out of “balance” for a while so you can build the life you’ve always dreamed for yourself, and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. Don’t feel guilty for putting in that time for you and your future. Sharing this photo as an example because it makes me crack up: I was shooting on location in Kauai here, I had 3 assistants with me and yet still in this moment, there I was laying on the floor bouncing the light with my foot! Balance is a myth, and sometimes you’ve got to go all in for a little while to get it done.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you do not need a perfect instagram feed to be a successful photographer. You know that stress you feel right now because you just posted a photo on your feed and it doesn’t “flow”? Let it go. You know those hours you put in trying to get your colors to match when tiny squares are placed next to each other? Let it go. You know that anxiety you experience because you don’t feel like your feed stacks up next to that other girls whose seems to flow effortlessly? Let it go. Why? Because. It. Doesn’t. Matter. So what DOES matter? Sharing your photography as it is, right now. Not your flow, or your captions, or your color scheme, or your aesthetic. Please believe me when I say that you don’t need to show your face in your stories and you don’t need to post 45000 reels before “the algorithm changes and it’s too late”. You don’t need to share about how much you love cheese. What do you need to do? Focus on sharing your photography! If you want to share about cheese, and post reels, and be all day every day in your stories, DO IT! But you don’t HAVE TO. Listen to what feels right FOR YOU. If instagram is overwhelming you, take a break and focus on your photography. Don’t let the stress overwhelm and paralyze you from moving forward. It’s just a marketing tool. Remember why you starting shooting in the first place, remember that it’s supposed to be fun. Put yourself out there without putting too much stress on yourself in the process. The world needs what YOU have to offer, you don’t need to do it like everyone else… do it like you. Because you’re pretty dang amazing and the world deserves to see it!

Have you ever had one of those moments when you go from feeling like the absolute baddest photographer babe out there to suddenly feeling all of your power & motivation fall away from you? Maybe you worked SO hard on something you’re SO proud of, but then you log into Instagram & see someone else who did it ‘WAY better’. Your mind starts to race, “I’ll never be able to get to that level. Am I even good? Can I even call myself a photographer? What am I even doing? Why are they getting work & not me?” Moments like this happen way more often than a lot of us want to admit, & the worst part is how damaging they can be to our confidence & sense of accomplishment when we let them go by unchecked. The good news, is that there are a few super easy things we can do to help us shimmy away from all of that imposter syndrome & self doubt. Because guess what? YOU ARE A PHOTOGRAPHER—no matter what you shoot, how you shoot it, or what anyone freakin’ says about it… AND you’re amazing. You DESERVE to call yourself a bad ass photographer because you ARE a bad ass photographer. It’s really as simple as that (but, I know, it never ever feels that simple). You deserve to feel proud of the work you’ve done, the hours you’ve put in, & the talent you’ve found while also being proud of the growth you still have left to do. The pursuit of photography never ends because there’s always something to learn, & just because there’s more to learn doesn’t mean you have nothing to show for it. Above all else, though, remember that learning is all part of the journey. Whatever path you’re on, & whatever obstacles you find yourself coming up against, have faith & confidence in yourself that you can push past them. I promise, we’ve all been there, & will continue to experience these hurdles time & time again. Confidence isn’t something you attain over night – it is a skill in itself, a muscle that must be stretched & built up day after day. So whatever you do, don’t let doubt & fear keep you from learning & trying new things, because each time you do, you grow further away from that comfort zone & one step closer to your dreams. Swipe right for reminders when imposter syndrome strikes…

Did you know that women were the pioneers of photography?! 😱💪🏼📸Two of photography’s earliest trailblazers were Anna Atkins and Julia Margaret Cameron. These women paved the way for many of us, yet 150 years later, gender inequality still exists in our industry. I did a bit of research yesterday on Women’s Day and discovered this: Less than 25% of the commercial photographers represented by the industry’s leading agents are female. Work by women only constitutes 3-5% of major permanent collections across the US and Europe. 80% of photography graduates are women — yet women make up only 15% of professional photographers. Women photographers are earning, on average, 40% less than their male counterparts. But research shows that women are a growing customer base in this industry and it’s truly detrimental not to represent us at a leadership level. Photo editors and agents say they’d “happily hire more female photographers… if they could only find them.” So let’s make sure our voices as women are heard. No more holding back, let’s make waves in this industry, to see this data, and instead of feeling fear… feel empowered. Empowered to share how WE as women-identifying photographers see and experience the world around us. Men and women have such different perspectives and it’s such a beautiful thing when we can each share our own unique experiences with the world through our images. Let’s use our beautiful images to make an impact as women in this industry, heard, seen, represented and respected. If I was able to make a name for myself as a woman in this industry, and create a successful 6 figure photography business, you can too. Don’t forget to sign up for my free live trainings this week! I’d love to help you achieve your goals and pave your path. *Data found on From Female in Focus, Women Photograph, Wired Magazine, and The Conversation.
