To the mamas- may you know that while today we celebrate you, what you do for us can never be appreciated in just one day. Thank you for your sacrifice, your patience, your willingness to show up. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And to my mama, thank you for coming to every game, every play, every competition, award ceremony, graduation, helping me with every move, surprising me from 2.5 hours away, keeping me silly and growing into someone way beyond just a mama, but a best friend. I love you. 💛
Hey photogs, I might hurt your feelings. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The wedding day your shooting? It’s not planned for your portfolio. The color palette, the flowers (real or fake), the dress, the venue.... your couple isn’t planning their wedding day so you can have pretty pins on Pinterest. And if you’re thinking that way, I’d ask you to really consider why you’re in this business. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To my couples, I truly want you to know that I don’t CARE what your day looks like as long as it is exactly what you want. Yes, I can take on specific wedding days based on what I’m passionate about but from there? I will make you feel supported in every decision along the way and my opinion outside of my expertise isn’t needed unless specifically asked. I want to capture YOUR story, not someone’s competitive version of your “perfect day”. And it is MY job to capture it in a unique, creative professional way. Your day isn’t going to be perfect and it shouldn’t be pressured to be. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What matters is YOU and your partner. Everything else is a bonus. And I want to make sure you know that. You deserve to feel like you don’t need the biggest bouquet. You don’t need the most expensive venue, you don’t even need the perfect dress. The whole point of this day is your love story, so don’t lose sight of that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I will be here, cheering you on and reminding you that no matter what, the table linens and cake don’t matter. YOU do. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Okay? Okay.
Hands up because my Utah retreat has officially FINISHED. I can’t wait to gush about the details with you all and believe me when I say these photos from today are going to blow your mind.
When I dip, you dip, we dip. 😉 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hawaii I miss you. If you think I should take 3-4 week hiatus every year to recharge in Hawaii please tell me to HIT THE ROAD HUNNY in the comments.
How to HANDLE COPYCATS. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First of all, I GET IT, trust me. I’ve had my website copied word for word, my brand almost entirely duplicated, “empowerment sessions” started being offered by other photographers, and even my welcome boxes were copied to a T. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I 👏🏼 GET 👏🏼 IT. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you work really hard on creating your own brand, it sucks when you see others ripping it off. BUT no matter how hard someone tries, they will NEVER be you. So here’s how you cope. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Get used to it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The more you grow, the more others are going to try and skip ahead by presenting themselves exactly how you do. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. It means you’re onto something. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ SERIOUSLY. Being copied means you’re doing something right and now others want to be where you are so instead of paying you, they copy you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Don’t let it stop you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you aren’t sharing knowledge or putting out incredible photos for fear of copycats, how will you reach your ideal clients? Copycats are literally everywhere from knock off brands to endless options- it’s YOU who will stand out for staying true to who you are. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4. Let them copy you, it won’t sound like them, it’ll sound like you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Think about it, all of the photogs who copied my website? Their website now sounds like me and when their clients meet them, there will be a disconnect. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 5. KEEP CHANGING YOUR COPY. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Keep creating, keep inventing, keep rewriting. Don’t give them time to catch up to all of the amazing things you are doing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You will be copied, it’s inevitable. As a beginner, I know I copied, thinking that it wouldn’t hurt anything. Then I realized it is SO important to be your own voice. If it feels icky, it is icky. I know it can feel challenging to be original so instead focus on speaking YOUR truth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What do you think?
HAPPY MAY DAY. One of my favorite months of the year for the warmer weather, blooms and celebrations including my grandma, my mom and my birthdays. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fun fact: my due date was on my moms birthday but naturally I was a little stubborn and wanted to be a Gemini instead. 🤷🏽♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Who else is a may baby or Gemini? Who else gets a lot of shit for being a Gemini? 😂 🙋🏽♀️
Welcome back green grass.. we’ve missed you. 😏
Hey vendors, I’m in an amazing situation where Im both a bride AND a vendor so I’m going to hit you with the hard truth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here are three HUGE mistakes I’m witnessing first hand while planning my wedding. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Never getting responded to. I have reached out to SEVERAL vendors in Wisconsin for different parts of my weddings and only ONE OR TWO of those vendors will respond PERIOD. If you want to make money, you NEED to be on top of your email inbox. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. Missing appointments. I have had to call vendors at our scheduled meetings because they have forgotten to call me. That makes me hella nervous to work with them because if they can’t have an organized schedule, what will our wedding day look like? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Being impersonal. I KNOW you’ve heard a million stories by now but if I’m handing you thousands of dollars, please care about your clients and their needs. The vendors I’m paying thousands are the ones who spent time writing thoughtful responses and referencing parts of our story. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was literally shocked to enter this world and it makes me advocate for MY couples way harder. If you wanna make the big bucks you need to run a thoughtfully organized business. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If this upsets you, it might be possible you’re doing one of these things. How can you be a better business? To my clients, what sold YOU on your vendors?
Sunset double vision. ☀️💛
There’s quite often a shot during a shoot where I yell “this is your indie rock band cover right here”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is courtney and Billy’s. I’d buy anything they sold with this cover. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ PS, it’s always a good idea to take a rug to a session. 😉 Happy Saturday. Stay wild, my friends.
