đ„MEET THE COMMITTEE đ„ Here, we introduce the second of Man Upâs 2021 Volunteers Directors: Matt Hardie! Have a read of Mattâs story about masculinity and why he wanted to be a part of Man Upâs team. âDuring the transition from an all-boys school to university life, it became abundantly clear that our high school education was missing some essential teachings. One of the things that stood out to me was how little we learnt about what it means to be a man in the world today. It seems ridiculous to throw so many young men into the world with so little guidance about how to conduct themselves in a positive and respectful manner, especially when the repercussions of toxic masculinity have such devastating effects on men, women, and the wider community. I am so excited to work with the MAN UP team this year to provide quality training to volunteers, in a way that empowers us to talk to young men about masculinity, without making them feel alienated or attacked. I look forward to building a passionate volunteer base that shares our goals of dispelling toxic masculinity and empowering young men.â

đ„MEET THE COMMITTEEđ„ Introducing Munaaf Khan, one of our two Volunteers Director. Have a read of Munaafâs story around masculinity, and why he wanted to be a part of the MAN UP Team. âThe reason I wanted to be part of the Man up team is because I wanted to be able to contribute to reducing the impact toxic masculinity has on society and think that Man Up is a great initiative to help do this. Toxic masculinity is such a pertinent issue in society and doesn't just affect men but has a ripple effect and impacts everyone to some degree. It affects men and their ability to express themselves, causing them to feel the need to conform to a set mould in an attempt to be the "perfect" manly man. This toxic pursuit of masculinity and the negative traits associated with masculinity are often associated with various problems in society, principally related to violence, social, domestic and sexual. These different types of violence are the principle reason that toxic masculinity has such a massive effect as it alters the way men interact with other men as well as women, non-binary people and children in their lives. It is because of the massive effect that it has not just at an individual level, but the effect it has at an interpersonal level that toxic masculinity is so important and is why education surrounding it is vital.â

đ„MEET THE COMMITTEE đ„ Here, we introduce Man Upâs 2021 Externalâs Director: David Hallam! Have a read of Davidâs story about masculinity and why he wanted to be a part of Man Upâs team. âEveryone finds it easy to talk about what IDENTITY is. It is just the traits, qualities, attributes, experiences that help someone understand who they are. However, when we are confronted with the questions: âWhat is YOUR identity? How do YOU identify? What makes you, YOU?â Itâs a struggle. Itâs almost as if, upon hearing those questions, our sense of identity evaporates and weâre left questioning what traits we ought to have. What are manly values? I believe that these questions can reveal how vacuous and disappointing our collective idea of masculinity can be. These questions can completely tear down our notion of The Self and what it means to be a man. Itâs a tough experience to go through, not being sure what your place in the world is. On top of that, we are confronted with the reality of men, especially Australian men, causing and experiencing so much harm and tragedy. Why do men perpetrate so much violence, crime and sexual assault? What is the antidote to the suffering that is inflicted by men towards others, even towards other men? I believe that part of the solution to these issues is confronting our beliefs, attitudes and values head on. This is why I have joined the Man Up team. We are all on a journey of self realisation. From the moment we are born, we are developing our idea of who we are and what masculinity is. You should not have to go through that journey alone. Which is why I am so excited to be a part of what Man Up achieves this year. At the heart of Man Upâs mission is a commitment to creating a community of blokes who just want other blokes to achieve their best. A commitment to creating a discourse about masculinity whilst simultaneously being unafraid of taking responsibility for the harm that we, as men, have caused. I couldnât think of a better mission to lend a hand to.â

Yesterday we had the opportunity to run our Male Culture workshop with the freshers at Tommy Moore College đđŒđđŒ This was our largest session yet, having a chat with over 40 boys from across WA. A huge thank you to our new volunteers who stepped up to the role and blew us away with their personal and presentation skills đ„đ€Ż To see how far the organization has come, and to think that this is only the beginning is truly exciting and motivating. We canât wait to hit up more schools/colleges, and help plant seeds in young boysâ minds around forming healthier definitions of masculinity đđŸ All it takes is a change of behavior from one person to create a ripple throughout the community đ If youâre keen to have us present at your school donât hesitate to get in contact with us!

We had an amazing time running our first volunteer training day for the year! đŻđ„ A major part of our work at MAN UP is training young men within our community the values and qualities we believe to be beneficial in their development as men. With this in mind, when we go to schools to run our workshops, our volunteers are walking examples of what we preach - therefore, more likely to send across a stronger message âđŸ We went over our Male Culture & Male Relationships workshops to educate our volunteers on the best way to present our material, and how to engage with the boys. We went over the Man Box, Call-Out Culture and identifying healthy/unhealthy relationships âđŸ A huge thank you to the volunteers who came down to learn about what we do, and how they can help our cause - we wouldnât be able to do the work we do if not for all of you so thank you âșïž

Weâd like to thank everyone who came down and showed support for our collaboration event with @ywasv_initiative last night. Sexual violence is a very real and troubling issue that affects so many people, and itâs about time we shine a light on it. This event gave an opportunity for women to share their stories around sexual violence, and it gave men the opportunity to learn just how common it is, and how their every day behaviours at some point have well and truly made a woman feel uncomfortable. After screening the Ted Talk, âRape & Reconciliationâ, guests participated in a workshop/discussion that looked at 5 key questions that, if people pondered on more often could help to reduce the occurrence of sexual violence within the community Overall, we believe it to have been a very enlightening and powerful evening, which wouldnât have been possible if not for everyonesâ open minds, as well as for @ywasv_initiative vulnerability and drive. Thank you
