  • Dearest Cape Town doggy parents, In the last week or so, we have had numerous phone calls from people asking for advice about the recent reports of dogs dying from Canine Parvovirus in Cape Town CBD and surrounds. Given our extensive experience with young puppies, we thought it might be helpful to share some of our knowledge involving this potentially deadly disease to assist dog parents with preventing it affecting their families too. We are puppy training specialists, who have three generations worth of experience, with a focus on in-home training for puppies during their critical learning period, i.e. up to 12-16 weeks. The vast majority of our clients are puppies under 6 months old, which statistically is the period of time when puppies are most at risk of contracting Parvo. With this in mind, we have gained a lot of knowledge and experience understanding how to keep puppies safe from this disease, whilst simultaneously developing their brain and building the vital neural pathways needed to set the foundations of their current and future behaviours. Our passion is for the animals. So, we feel that it is our moral duty to share with you any information that could potentially save a life. So, here it goes: WHAT IS CANINE PARVOVIRUS AND HOW IS IT SPREAD? Parvo is a highly contagious virus which attacks the gastrointestinal tracts of dogs. The virus itself cannot be cured, even with antibiotics. Only symptoms can be treated and the dog is given medications to boost their immune system and maximize chances of recovery. The virus is contracted through contact with infected fecal matter (dog poo). A vulnerable dog only needs to sniff a small number of molecules of infected fecal matter to become infected. There are 350,000 viral units in 1 ounce of feces, a vulnerable dog only needs to make contact with 1000 viral units to catch the virus ... We were out on an adventure, practising recall at the Sea Point Promenade, when it started absolutely bucketing down with rain. So poor Master Benji was rushed back to the warmth of the car where he was showered with cuddles and snuggles. But the moment he felt warm enough, he glanced up and gave this look, as if to say: Okay, I'm ready to get back out there now. Such an enthusiastic little munchkin! #throwbackthursday #tbt

Expert tip: Fill a hoof with a tasty mix of doggy-friendly fruit and veg, top off with a thin layer of salt-free / sugar-free peanut butter, then freeze. Serve to your puppy, frozen. This is one of the best ways to soothe the aching gums of a teething puppy. It's also a great way of keeping little chompers busy! Good luck! Also, happy father's day!
