Created by artist and activist Rafiul Alom Rahman. He was motivated to “undo years of guilt most Muslim queer people like him grow up with.
That is why he wanted to build a safe space for queer #Muslims in #India, both online as well as offline. “For a long time, I couldn’t come to terms with my own desires. I always felt there was something abnormal about it. I remember, long back, when I was 14 or 15, I approached a maulana and told him about how I feel, that I don’t know what this is. He said. ‘You’re very young. Otherwise, I would’ve advised you to marry a woman. But since you’re young what you can do is offer prayers and fast. And each time such thoughts cross your mind, just take cold showers.’ So I grew up with this very skewed idea about sexuality,” says Rafiul.

  • #LegalizeLGBT: Hopes are high that #Botswana and #Kenya will be the next two countries to overturn their anti-gay laws, if court challenges in both countries are successful. “The Botswana High Court scheduled a hearing for March 15, 2019, on the constitutionality of Botswana’s laws that make same-sex intimacy a crime.

The Kenyan High Court in Nairobi set Feb. 22, 2019, as the date when it will announce whether it will overturn the law condemning people convicted of consensual gay sex to as much as 14 years in prison.

The court challenge in Kenya came from the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC), an independent human rights organization.

The challenge in Botswana was filed by a gay man identified only as LM, who is supported by the local LGBT rights group @legabibo.

Similar constitutional challenges to the anti-gay laws of #Barbados, #Jamaica, #Lebanon, #Malawi, and #Singapore are also on the horizon.
Other challenges to anti-gay laws are reportedly in the works in #Cameroon, #Morocco, and #Tunisia.

#LGBT rights #activists won major #victories in court in 2018.

#Trinidad’s High Court ruled in April that that nation’s anti-gay law was unconstitutional.

#India’s Supreme Court made a similar ruling in September.

In early 2017, the eyes of the world turned to Kadyrov, calling Chechnya a hotbed of severe atrocities against its #LGBT community. At that time, there were horrifying stories of mass detentions, torture and murders erupted, followed by mass evacuation of LGBT community members and global outrage.

Novaya Gazeta’s lead reporter Elena Milashina, who broke the original story, says the first crisis never ended. “Nothing has really indicated that the 2017 crisis stopped,” Milashina says. “There was the first wave, and there were lots of people who got detained and tortured. And throughout the past two years the attacks were continuing, the numbers of those affected just got lower. Nobody cancelled the order for the [gay] cleansing.” https://www.opendemocracy.net/od-russia/tamara-grigoryeva/chechnya-lgbt-crisis-20-what-questions-you-need-to-be-asking
