• Wondering how to get your farm featured in the local newspaper (and beyond!)?🗞
.
When most of us farmers hear the word “networking” we get a little pang at the bottom of our stomach. The word sounds so modern, so glossy, so dare I say it - corporate.🤭
.
What this word has stood for over the last few decades in our culture is quite literally the opposite of why most of us farm. We farm to escape the rigidity of cubicles, the stuffiness of meetings, and the obligation of hard deadlines.🌱
.
I want to reframe networking for you and your farm so it doesn’t make you want to turn tail and run to the back forty. Instead, I want you to see how networking is a powerful tool for you to get your farm featured in your local newspaper and beyond.🎉
.
Your farm is a business, and as a business, it needs a community of people that support it, believe in it, and ultimately, spend their money with it. When you are just starting out, you have only one person who believes in it, supports it, and spends their money on it. That person is you.😘
.
I’m sure you’ve browsed your local paper and seen features here and there on local businesses and causes that can start quite a buzz. How do you think those features got printed?🧐
.
The answer is self-promotion. Public Relations is a department that most companies have to spread the word about their business. You have one too, it’s called the Department of You.😎
.
So how do you cold call a reporter and pitch your farm to be featured? Well, I wrote a whole blog post about it.✨
.
How do I know it works? Well, my farm has been featured in the Milwaukee @journalsentinel, @AcresUSA magazine, and I’m sure most of you found me when I did my @ModFarm takeover.⚡️
.
When it comes to marketing your farm, I’m here to share what’s worked for us. Getting featured in our local paper grew our customer base by 30% in a single month. So what are you waiting for? Go learn how we made it happen at the link in my bio.💫

  • I got a ton of DMs on how we made our farmstand sign so I thought I’d share here!🔨
.
CONSTRUCTION: leftover 5/8” wood sheet cut into two 3’x1.5’ pieces. We did ours sandwich board style, two sided, same wording on both sides. We secured a metal chain and two eye hooks to each side, up halfway, to keep it from opening up and falling over on us in the wind.💨
.
DESIGN: I designed everything on @canva and then used a Cricut machine to create templates. Painted everything with a flat black enamel paint (the only type that wouldn’t fade in the sun). Secured the negative template with double sided tape. Then spray painted it with white enamel. Touched up the fuzzy edges as needed. 🎨
.
I chose white on black because it catches drivers’ eye. When the farmstand is open and the sign is out, we constantly have people slowing down in front of our house to read the sign, then back up, and pull in.😂
.
The only thing I would’ve done differently is made the font size a bit bigger everywhere, but hindsight is 20/20.😄
.
If ya got other questions about our signage, chime in below!❤️
