As the first public school in the metro Boston area to offer the prestigious IB program (introducing it in 2005), Mystic Valley has always been actively involved in promoting the benefits of the program within the school and community at large. On April 1, two senior and two junior IB Diploma candidates had the opportunity to continue those efforts, visiting the Massachusetts State House for the first IB Celebration and Awareness Day. The event’s goal was to raise awareness about the IB program in Massachusetts, eventually resulting in the potential for increased recognition of IB results at the legislative level. To prepare for the event, juniors Stacey Fabo and Hanhminh Nguyen created a poster highlighting elements of the IB program. Seniors Jonah Crain and Ethan Nguyen presented their research on existing policies relating to the IB program’s recognition among colleges and universities. During the event, legislators praised the skills and traits that IB students have developed through their courses, such as being reflective scholars and inquirers. Following the morning session, all students attended a tour of the State House and were able to hear more about the history, art, and function of the legislative chambers beneath the famous golden dome of the State House. The event may be the first of many to share the accomplishments of IB students on a statewide basis, and may impact real change in how the IB program is recognized among educators at all levels across the state. Since introducing the IB program, 92 Mystic Valley students have earned the IB Diploma. A total of 778 students (82% of the students eligible) have taken at least one IB class at Mystic Valley.

Mystic Valley High Schoolers Perform Guys and Dolls On March 23rd and 24th, fourteen Mystic Valley high schoolers hit the Emerson Auditorium stage in a dynamic production of Guys and Dolls before an eager audience of friends and family. It was the culmination of three months of rehearsal led by directors Mrs. Elena Henreckson and Mr. Nikolai Dignoti, and Music Director Mr. Jonathan Henreckson. Junior Nick Sokolovic starred as lead Sky Masterson. He played opposite Emily Festa (Sarah Brown). John Kalevas portrayed the roll of Nathan Detroit along with senior Kayla Fraser who played Adelaide with a crowd-pleasing rendition of “Adelaide’s Lament.” Josh Herson graced the stage as Nicely Nicely Johnson with Steven Munafo as Benny Southstreet and Rosanna Caralis as Harry the Horse. Jamie Cochran portrayed General Matilda Cartwright with Samantha Tsang as Agatha. The Hot Box dancers were played by Mary Callanan (Mimi), Simone Gateas, Gabby Kalevas, Cassie Paul, and Payson Ribaudo. Three faculty members made guest appearances: Mr. Nikolai Dignoti as Big Jule, Mr. Nick Quinn as Arvide, and Mr. Chris Doyon as Lieutenant Brannigan. Guys and Dolls was written in 1955 and set in New York City. Nathan Detroit, host of New York’s famous floating crap game, bets Sky Masterson $1,000 to take a missionary, Miss Sarah Brown, on a date to Havana, Cuba. Filled with high-energy dance numbers, famous songs such as “Bushel and a Peck” and “Luck be a Lady,” and wild chases, this Broadway hit has had audiences cheering ever since Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando played the leading roles. The production consisted of Mr. Quinn as Technical Director, Ms. Leanne Reigel as Set Designer, Mrs. Henreckson as Costume Designer, and Mr. Dignoti as the Fight Choreographer. The directors could not be more proud of the hard work and dedication of the cast and crew. This play would not have happened had it not been for the joint efforts of parents, students, and teachers alike.
