“I have always loved having events to look forward to - anything different from the regular routine. Something about attending a well-executed event and making new memories excites me! But it wasn’t until my late high school years as a student leader that I realized I had a passion and talent for being involved in the planning and implementation of events, not just attending them. Creating unforgettable experiences for other people (along with myself) is one of my favorite things! For the past few years, I have worked in the floral industry, which has given me the unique opportunity to have a behind the scenes view of a wide variety of happenings in our community, each with different layouts, visuals, and logistics. These experiences have been a great bonus to me in my current position on the WSUSA Activities Team, where I get to help plan events for students at Weber State. Giving my fellow Wildcats opportunities to create memories of their own and have fun nights while they are in college has been amazing! I hope to continue to grow and use all the things I have learned to make more big events happen in the future.”

“In 2009 I worked as a visiting scholar at the University of Sussex. My advisor Sue Thornham trained me to use the feminist media studies approach to understand media representation. That was the first time when I was exposed to concepts of gender, diversity, representation, abnormality, and discursiveness, among others. I started to look at the broad society and particular individuals from a self-reflectively marginal viewpoint. For me, that moment changed my academic career entirely. The knowledge I was exposed to at that time still impacts me now. I am currently working in the discipline of social media and data analytics, and I cannot help my critical thinking about ethics, diversity, equity, and inclusiveness all the time. My research is about how to use social media for the public good. I also hope my students can always try others' shoes when they evaluate or investigate any phenomenon they are interested in. In this sense, that moment is one of the most critical times in my life. Without that moment, I may not have had the courage to study abroad and retake my academic training -- and therefore, I would not be a professor here.” - Li Chen, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Social Media and Data Analytics

“One of my favorite things to do in my free time is to read. I love hopping into another world (even if I should be in this world doing homework). I love reading mainly fiction, but I also love learning from other people by reading biographies or autobiographies. Reading makes me happy because I get to connect with characters and learn from them. I don’t think there is a single person on this planet that hates reading - I just think a lot of people haven’t found a book they love yet. I read a book called ‘Dry.’ It’s a thriller book and not something I would normally read but I gave it a shot. It is a story about a drought that happens in California. Because of political reasons and other things, California is left to fend for itself in this deadly drought. It shows how people turn into monsters and how greedy and ugly they can be. Near the end of the book, the main characters are about to die from dehydration. A character yells to her friend to keep walking and if he can’t do it for himself then he should do it for her. And he does keep going. The main character then says this one line that has stuck with me, ‘I realize that this is the true core of human nature: When we’ve lost the strength to save ourselves, we somehow find the strength to save each other.’”

“One of my favorite classes at Weber State is backcountry touring. The class consists of learning about avalanches in the classroom for one day (how they are triggered, where they happen, how to avoid them), one day practicing avalanche rescue, then two days going into the backcountry to snowboard or ski. Two of my favorite things in life are snowboarding and spending time outside enjoying nature. This class is the perfect fit. I also love learning how to stay save and how the environment works. In short, backcountry touring is one of my favorite classes because I can learn about the world and how it works, then apply it to doing some of the things I love most. Snowboarding and spending time outside.”
