Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • We interrupt our advent calendar of care posts to share with you exactly why we are posting these ideas of how to care for new mums in your community in the first place. @andrealeadsom MP has warned that “Coronavirus restrictions are fuelling an "epidemic" of postnatal depression”. “We are staring down the barrel of a real epidemic of postnatal depression and early attachment issues with mums who have been unsupported who struggle to really find their feet.” Doulas know this all too well. We know that lack of support in the early stages of motherhood can have a detrimental effect. It’s why we do what we do, every single day. So please, if you’re a new mum or mum-to-be, think about your postnatal plan and how you can ensure you do have the support you need and deserve. If you’re reading this and there are new mums/parents in your life or your community, please look back on the simple care tips we’ve provided on this advent calendar of care. Showing new mums and parents support and letting them know you are available to help could make all of the difference 🙏🏻 Postnatal doula vouchers are available to buy from The Doula Directory (link in bio). Doulas are not restricted from entering people’s houses as this is essential for them to carry out their very important work. 🔎 Search for a doula in your area on The Doula Directory (link in bio). #TheDoulaDifference #ShowYourSupport

Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • Day 1️⃣1️⃣ ❤️ The caring idea behind the 11th door in our advent village comes from @_taraghosh_ Arvigo therapist and La Leche League leader... Swipe left ⬅️ to reveal! 💝 Here’s what else Tara experienced and found to be so helpful in those newborn days: “I had my kids when we lived in India so I was blessed - and constantly grateful - that I had a lot of practical support plus heavenly daily massages. Emotionally, although my husband was amazing, I would have liked more people telling me I was doing great, that the newborn phase was hard but it passes – and for someone to fully listen to my birth story and let me mourn that I had a caesarean birth when a home birth was planned. If someone you know has just had a baby, making a tasty meal for them, cleaning their house, entertaining their older kids or just providing some quiet company while they sit for hours breastfeeding can be really impactful – and I can recommend those daily massages!” Thank you so much @_taraghosh_ for sharing your experience and thoughts 💝 - Each day up until Christmas we are going to be taking a walk through our village and opening the door of a house to reveal a practical and easy way to support new or expectant parents in your community ❤️ as it really does take a village to raise a child. Please share these ideas, we would love for them to spread far and wide and reach as many parents as possible this Christmas. ❤️ #thedouladifference #christmascare #sharethedoulalove #thedouladirectory

Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • Day 6️⃣ ❤️ We’ve changed it up for today’s caring idea... this one is for expectant or new mums. It’s been given to us by @drlarisacorda Obstetrician & Gynaecologist ... Swipe left and read on to reveal! 💝 “This festive season, really commit the time to focus on the positives within your control. So much of this year has been outside of any of our control, especially if you've found yourself pregnant. But grounding yourself and realising all the positives in your life, as well as creating a support bubble, whether it be virtual or in person, will help you to overcome the many obstacles that are currently in place. Remember, as women, we are not supposed to bring children into the world all on our own. It takes a village and though that village may not be what you may be used to, it still exists and you need never be alone. One of the loveliest things I've seen during the pandemic, is how much the women admitted to the antenatal and postnatal wards are supporting one another, given the restrictions to partner visiting. That female bond has become stronger than ever and just goes to show that there's always some silver lining, even in the most difficult of situations 💞” Thank you @drlarisacorda 🙏🏻 - Each day up until Christmas we are going to be taking a walk through our village and opening the door of a house to reveal a practical and easy way to support new or expectant parents in your community ❤️ as it really does take a village to raise a child. Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • Day 5️⃣ ❤️ The caring idea behind the fifth door in our village comes from @kicki.hansard founder of @_thedouladirectory_ and @birthblissacademy ... Swipe left to reveal! 💝 Taking the 🗑 bins out can quite literally lift a heavy load from new parents. It seems so simple- but trying to battle with bin bags whilst holding a newborn is not easy! It also gives them a chance to rest when baby is sleeping too by taking something off of the to do list. Simple but very very helpful ❤️ Thanks Kicki! 🙌🏻 - Each day up until Christmas we are going to be taking a walk through our village and opening the door of a house to reveal a practical and easy way to support new or expectant parents in your community ❤️ as it really does take a village to raise a child. Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • #TheDoulaDifference Advent Calendar ❤️ This December, things are going to be a little different for new and expectant parents. The distance we are required to keep between us to keep us safe, is going to affect how supported they are. Every day, doulas support and nurture new and expectant parents to be able to step into parenthood in a more positive and confident way. But you can help them too- and your love and support has never been more needed. So to give you some ideas on how you can help, each day up until Christmas we are going to be taking a walk through our village and opening the door of a house to reveal a practical and easy way to support new or expectant parents in your community ❤️ as it really does take a village to raise a child. Repost from @birth_trauma_association_uk • The insights revealed today by the Duchess of Cambridge and The Royal Foundation are staggering but not surprising. These key stats, which stood out, are even more significant and concerning when viewed through the lens of birth trauma and its impact on parents and therefore children.. 💔 90% of people see parental mental health and wellbeing as being critical to a child’s development 💔 People do very little to prioritise themselves. Only 10% of parents mentioned taking the time to look after their own wellbeing in preparation for the arrival of their baby 💔Compounding this lack of focus on their own mental wellbeing, one in five parents (18%) says that they would feel uncomfortable seeking help for how they were feeling 💔 Many are struggling to cope with stress, exhaustion and the problems of juggling priorities

Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • 3 self care tips for mums during the pandemic: 1️⃣ Put your needs first. Self care is not selfish. If you need help or support, please, ask for it. If you need a break from work or looking after other children you may have, ask for it. Pregnancy takes its toll on the body and mind at the best of times, a pandemic added to the journey means self care is even more important 2️⃣ Empower yourself with knowledge. Understand your options and see what is in your control so you never feel out of control along your journey. This may be through an antenatal class, hypnobirthing course, reading a book or speaking to a health professional. Avoid online forums if possible, stick to reputable sources always. 3️⃣ Book a birth and/or postnatal doula. A doula is a walking library and emotional support, so they could help you to focus on tip 1 & 2 in a very personalised and effortless way. Doulas are providing in person support where they can, but also virtual support where restrictions on partners are in place. You deserve quality care and support during your pregnancy and postnatally, especially during a pandemic. #butnotmaternity #enoughisenough #selfcareformums - The Doula Directory is the No1 place to find a professional @birthblissacademy doula. Our doulas offer both birth and postnatal support, something that all parents deserve. Head to the link in our bio to search for a doula near you ❤️

Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • Today’s Mail On Sunday has published the results of a landmark study involving 15,000 women which found: ❌ 97% said their anxiety had increased about childbirth since lockdown ❌ 1 in 5 women said they had to undergo intrusive examinations to ‘prove’ they had entered the final stage of childbirth ❌ 90% of women surveyed said the restrictions are having an impact on their mental health The article also highlights that we, along with many other campaigners and MPs have written to the NHS chief Sir Simon Stevens to swiftly roll out the 15 minute tests to maternity wards as an absolute priority. (As they said they would). We are so grateful to everyone who is supporting the #ButNotMaternity campaign. The results from the study are sadly not surprising. Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • Choosing a doula is a bit like interviewing for a new friend or family member! It’s important that you feel completely at ease and comfortable with them, and them with you too. Head to The Doula Directory, enter your postcode and see who is in your area. Send them an email to see who is available during your due time. It’s a good idea to meet 2 or 3 doulas in your area for coffee/on Zoom before you make any decisions. You can then make it really clear what support you would like from them, and they can clearly explain what support they are able/willing to provide for you too. #findadoula #yourdoula - The Doula Directory is the No1 place to find a professional @birthblissacademy doula. Repost from @aliciakearns • NEWS: I am delighted that the Prime Minister has just announced that to support pregnant women, 15-min rapid COVID-19 tests will be prioritised for maternity in hospitals to ensure women don’t give birth alone. Thank you for backing our campaign @borisjohnsonuk @matthancockmp and for making this vital decision to stand by women and their families. As COVID rates rise across country, this is the only solution to ensure women have the support they need and deserve, whilst also giving clinicians more confidence and keeping them safe. Rapid COVID-19 tests will also be rolled out to support people going through cancer treatment, for paediatrics to support children, and for those in care homes to ensure they can have loved ones to care for, and support, them. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “No woman should go through labour alone which is why we will use testing to give women and their partners the support they need and deserve, and I commend those who are tirelessly campaigning on this issue, including the Mail on Sunday and Alicia Kearns MP.” “We will soon be able to use new tests to improve life for those going through the best and worst of times. We will roll out quick turnaround tests in special clinical settings so those going through cancer treatment, women giving birth, those in paediatric settings can have their loved ones around them - they will be able to be tested on entry to make sure their treatments, labour and visits can be done as safely as possible and the risk of infection in hospitals is minimised.” Thank you to the Mail on Sunday, @pregnant_then_screwed , @kicki.hansard and @birthbetter for your constant campaigning for women and their partners. We did this together. #ButNotMaternity

Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • New mum @ayanagabriellelage recently wrote a piece for @glamouruk highlighting how a birth plan can save Black women’s lives. The article also highlighted how having a doula reduces Black maternal mortality rate, as well as positively influencing other factors too. This applies not just to birth, but during pregnancy and the postnatal period too. @birthblissacademy doulas who are listed on The Doula Directory are incredibly aware of the vulnerability of Black women and will always have this fact at the forefront of their mind when supporting them and advocating for them. Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • Almost 2 months on from the start of the #ButNotMaternity campaign, these are not the headlines we want to see. Many hospitals HAVE lifted restrictions, but many still have not. It’s unacceptable. Please, whether you are expecting a baby or you just feel very strongly about the restrictions on partners, ➡️ Keep writing to/emailing your hospital trust and local MPs asking them for updates and WHY the rules have not changed, (template letters in the bio) ➡️ sign the petition and share it so more people sign it ➡️ share your bump photo with #butnotmaternity written on it and be sure to add the hashtag to the post too We are still doing everything we can at this end, along with other campaigners, but we still need everyone to keep applying the pressure too 🙏🏻 #lockedoutofbirth #enoughisenough

Repost from @birthbetter • We're shining a light on responsive, innovative and compassion-focused care at the Royal Berkshire. For the next three days we're sharing a mini blog series written by a passionate team of professionals who are working tirelessly to keep maternity care as open as possible during Covid. Today's blog is from Jane, an obstetrician. She shares the ways they are battling Covid creatively as a team. Swipe up in stories to read it. * The restrictions put in place on NHS maternity care during Covid are still a vital topic of conversation. Each hospital trust has varied enormously and thanks to calls from MP's and fellow campaign groups, some NHS leaders have allowed birth partners back into more scans, births and postnatal wards. But as @aliciakearns Alicia Kearnes MP wrote today: "I urge NHS trusts to put humanity and clinical outcomes at the heart of their maternity rules." * Rising rates of Covid risk things sliding backwards again. Some trusts still don't want to change their rules despite the fact that mothers and babies are clinically worse off when partners are kept away. This is why it is so so important to bring you the thoughtful perspectives of professionals doing everything they can to make birth better during this global pandemic. 💜 * #covidchallenges #thinktraumanow #nhs #butnotmaternity#makebirthbetter #maternalmentalhealth #birthtrauma #postnatalptsd #birth #midwife #gp #obstetrician #healthvisitor #neonatal #psychologist #psychiatrist #doula #hypnobirthing #birthworker #traumaresolution #mentalhealthmatters #wellnessthatworks #socialenterprise #changemakers

Repost from @butnotmaternity • DAY OF ACTION #ButNotMaternity Today, people across the UK are taking mass action to call out the rollback of maternity rights under Covid-19 restrictions. We have seen positive changes in the past few weeks but still, in many hospitals, parents cannot attend scans together, or support throughout the whole of their labour and recovery. How to take part 💪: 1️⃣ Take your own photo - write #ButNotMaternity on your bump, body or a sign. Tag your NHS trust and MP and use #ButNotMaternity 2️⃣ If you can't take your own - help share this pic in your stories and flood the hashtag #ButNotMaternity 3️⃣ Sign and share the petition (link in bio) . 4️⃣ Use templates from @aims_uk and @birthrightsorg (link on our website in bio) to write to your trusts and MPs. Also contact your MVP and hospitals PALS. While some trusts are less restrictive than others, the postcode lottery of how much support a woman receives in pregnancy must end. Thank you for your support! 📸 @sadielizafrost Thank you to @anomalous_collective for use of their studio. It’s also a lovely mindfulness tool for mum as they hear it regularly and use it to bond with baby. ❤️ The vouchers can be redeemed for any doula who is listed on The Doula Directory for birth or postnatal support hours. Repost from @aims_uk • AIMS is campaigning for all Trusts in England to lift their restrictions on partners/supporters attending antenatal scans and appointments, in line with the guidance from NHS England. To help create media interest we are seeking ‘case studies’. If you have been affected by the restrictions and would be happy to have the details of your experience shared publicly, please get in touch with campaigns@aims.org.uk. You would need to be willing to have your name, age, occupation and location published in the media, together with a photo. Repost from @_thedouladirectory_ • Reposting MP and campaigner for restrictions to be lifted on partners in the maternity setting, @aliciakearns 🙏🏻🙌🏻 This week in the House of Commons, I asked the Health Secretary for clarity on the COVID-19 guidance for pregnant women in their third trimesters given their much higher vulnerability to the virus. I will update residents following my briefing with the Deputy Chief Medical Officer and upon receipt of the updated guidance. #butnotmaternity

Repost from @birthrightsorg • Birthrights is keen to hear from individuals who would be interested in legally challenging visitor restrictions in maternity services at their local Trust. You could be in the early stages of pregnancy and concerned about the fact that your partner will not be with you during scans or at other crucial points during your maternity care. You could also be a partner who is keen to be at their loved one’s side. Or you could already have been affected by the restrictions, for example, having received bad news on your own, having asked for your partner to be there. You are unlikely to receive financial compensation, but we will ensure your legal costs are covered. To find out more with no commitment please contact us at advice@birthrights.org.uk

Repost from @butnotmaternity • This is what MPs can and should be doing for you. When your MP says they cannot help, remind them that they may not be able to change restrictions themselves directly, but they can raise the issue in parliament and put pressure on @borisjohnsonuk and @matthancockmp to talk further with the NHS #Repost @stockportbirth @download.ins --- THIS is the kind of support we want to see! 👏 Every single person interested in maternity care should be making calls to support this. It might not be something that you want to admit but it is only those that DO things that make mistakes. 😎 . It's no good waiting for when you'll have time or put things off until the next day. You need to make time and prioritise things that matter to you for it to happen! 🙌 . Remember, you'll be moving forwards and learning something new with every mistake that you make! 💕 #becomeadoula #doulatraining #doulacourse #birthblissacademy #birthblissdoulas #doulalife #doulalove #makingadifference

We really like to make this an experience that is more than a training course at #birthblissacademy 😍 . Spending four days together, whether in person or virtually, really makes everyone learn so much from each other. 🙌 . We have another three courses left this year, one virtual and two that we hope, will be in person. 🙏 . Find all the venues and dates on www.birthblissacademy.com . #becomeadoula #doulatraining #makeadifference #doulalove #doulalife #birthblissdoulas #doulacourse
