Want to know how to create publishable features off the back of new book launches? Our Senior Lecturer Sarah Franklin has the inside track. Using her just launched novel #HowtoBelong (which features a female farrier and a female butcher) as a topical hook for this piece in the November issue of @womanandhome magazine, Sarah interviewed three women who do rural 'men's work'. Check it out. #publishing #media #journalism #creativeindustries #writingcareers #featurewriting #novelwriting #author #writer #lecturer #authorsofinstagram

If you joined us at our BA Media, Journalism and Publishing virtual open day this morning, please give us a wave or a like. Online open days are not quite the same as meeting face to face, but we do love the fact that we can speak to students from all over the world. Hopefully this makes our course more accessible to a broader global community. In fact, our students come from all over the UK, Europe and the rest of the world including China, India, South Korea, Columbia, the UAE and more! In the picture is our second year student @sabriinandrade who is based in France while our course student ambassadors are @anna.rosetinted (UK), @by.mariehenriksen (Norway), @uggnem (Lithuania), @yasminarnould (Belgium). They are very happy to answer your questions. So leave a message in the comments below or feel free to DM us. And if you are a member of our course already, let us know where you are based in the comments! Have a great weekend 😊 #media #journalism #publishing #creativeindustries #hellobrookes #globalmedia #international #community #everyoneiswelcome #accessibility #diversifythemedia

Congratulations to @lisamarkswrites on the forthcoming publication day (1 Sept) of her brilliant new book, ‘Ryan is Ready For You Now’. Lisa is one of our favourite guest lecturers and a leading celebrity journalist, and what she doesn’t know about the A-listers isn’t worth knowing 😂 Lisa is pictured here in the classroom with our lecturer @alexandra_shakespeare and her MA Magazine Publishing students (special shout out to the class of 2017!). Part-memoir, part-manual for the study of journalism, we’ll definitely be using some of Lisa’s interview techniques and tips outlined in the book in our journalism modules. Hurrah! Hope to see you back in our classroom again soon, Lisa.

This time last year we took our OICP students (and our bespoke red banner) on a tour around China. The trip is organised by @obuconfucius who are based with us at Brookes. Our Confucius Institute is the only one at a uni that specialises in publishing, which means that we not only get free Mandarin lessons before we go but we are also able to attend the Beijing International Book Fair and visit media groups, newsrooms and publishers, in between seeing all the cultural hotspots. It really was the most AWESOME experience and when life returns to normal, we hope to run the trip again. Shout out to our host @xiaochen330 and all the tutors who supported our students on the trip last year and in previous years (@alexandra_shakespeare @philipshaw2 @batarquini @mjj801). What are your favourite memories? We’ve tagged some of you that attended (if we can find you on Insta) and we would love you to share your highlights below. And bonus points to anyone who can translate the words on our banner...

Meet your lecturers! ***************************************** Hi, I’m Alex (@alexandra_shakespeare ) and I run the undergraduate Media, Journalism and Publishing degree at @oxfordbrookes . This is me pictured mid-lecture in the classroom - I can’t wait to see you there in September. Give me a wave if you’ll be joining us 👋 A little bit about me. I’m a former editor and I’ve worked on titles such as @bazaaruk and @harpersbazaararabia along with many others over the last 20 years, after graduating with a degree in Fashion Promotion from @unicreativearts . Alongside my lecturing, I still freelance, although I’m not so focussed on fashion these days. My most recent editorial projects and pieces include: 1) a review of The Handbook of Magazine Studies for the Journal of Magazine Media, where I’m an associate editor. 2) A digital transformation strategy for WIPO Magazine. 3) A travel guide to London for @natgeo . 4) A booklet on the power of modern languages for the @ahrcpress When I’m not lecturing on journalism or writing about it, I love to read about the unique lives of other journalists and what drives them. Swipe through for my recent reads... Have you read any good memoirs, blogs or non-fiction books by journos that have inspired you? Leave your recommendations in the comments below and I’ll share them on our insta stories. If you have any questions for me about the course, life at Brookes or on careers in the media, please do ask! DMs are always open.

Hi! My name is Lottie Burnett-Armstrong and I am a 2020 Publishing Media graduate from Oxford Brookes. For my major project I chose to take something on that I knew I would be interested in for the duration of the year and beyond. I created a food and recipes website and an accompanying Instagram called @thisperfectplate. I chose this name because I believe that whatever food you love eating, and makes your mind and body happy, is the perfect plate for you! I am all about balance and not excluding any food groups (except for allergy reasons!). I love cooking and trying new foods so I wanted to share the things I cooked and ate with other people. The fact that I was able to incorporate all of that into an academic project was pretty exciting. I had such a fun time putting it all together and showing @batarquini (who was my major project advisor) my progress and new website designs each week was really motivating. I’m so glad Brookes Publishing offers such a range of options for major projects as it means students end up putting everything into their work and feel really proud of their end project. Check out my Instagram page and website for some tasty recipes.’ ****************************************** Which of Lottie’s recipes do you fancy trying out yourself? Leave in the comments below!

If I was hiring, this creative pitch by our brilliant recent graduate @fleurbernadine would definitely catch my eye. Fingers crossed for you Fleur🤞🤞🏻🤞🏾 Here she explains the thinking behind it... ‘I recently applied for a position at Sixteenth. I'm aware of the highly competitive environment we are living in so wanted to try and make my CV stand out. With this in mind, I redesigned it to take the form of Instagram, Twitter and YouTube due to the nature of Sixteenth. I'm particularly happy with the YouTube/work experience page. I've really enjoyed doing this and it's definitely inspired me to think outside the box more when applying for roles.’

Meet our team! 🎓💡💁♀️👩🎓🧑🏼🎓👡👠👢🐔🐥🐣 This is Sarah Franklin (left) and Beverley Tarquini (right). They are the best colleagues and the best lecturers and here they are pictured at one of our annual Working in Publishing Days, where industry members visit our students to talk shop (and Beverley breaks out the office wine stash). Two fun facts about them: Beverley: Chicken fanatic. She has a copy of all the chicken books ever published (almost) and there is a squeaky chicken toy living in her office (which occasionally makes it into the classroom). She’s our resident children’s publishing expert, and having worked for many of the major publishers in sales and editorial, there is nothing she doesn’t know about Publishing List Development (wouldn’t you agree, third years and @philipshaw2 ?) ****************************************** Sarah: No word of a lie, she has the best shoe wardrobe ever seen. Also, a member of the judging panel for the annual Costa Book Awards, her second novel, How To Belong, is out in November. Her first, Shelter, is set in the Forest of Dean where she grew up. Will her third novel feature the plot twist that is 2020? You’ll have to ask her! Anyway, what Sarah doesn’t know about the art and craft of storytelling, isn’t worth knowing. Fact. ******************************************* What have we missed? Current students and alumni, we’d love you to leave your fun facts about these two geniuses below in the comments! 👇🏽

Today our lecturers Angus Phillips who is also an author, and editor @alexandra_shakespeare took part in a creative careers talk for the students of @doverbroecks_oxford school alongside the brilliant executive director of @sunsetandvinetv Andrew Preece and *exciting* the comedian @rorybremner1 who seamlessly worked in spot-on impressions of BoJo and Trump. He had sage advice too - be curious, use your initiative and follow your dream no matter what. But be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up. ****************************************************** What career or life advice made an impression on you? Do let us know in the comments! ***************************************************** The talk was delivered online, so instead of a screenshot of our faces, here’s a throwback to another great careers panel event attended by @alexandra_shakespeare for @oxfordcareers @ashmoleanmuseum

Harry McNeil is one of our first year BA #media #journalism and #publishing students and he is the founder of @existnews ... ‘My reason for starting @existnews was to improve my skills, focusing on my writing, designing, and communication, while working in a team, to create something respected and consistent. Applying what we learn from our course, I believe we can create something that we can all be proud of. Some facts about me are that I’ve always been more of a summer person, with the attraction of music festivals to going to the beach, it’s hard for me not to be. Outside of my love for summer, I enjoy keeping active (especially at the moment) and my sport of choice has always been football, no contest. Other pastimes include relaxing on PlayStation, to going on a night out! Previous jobs have included working at Bombay Sapphire distillery, if you can’t tell, I love a drink. In my time there I worked on the bar, while saving money to go do what I always wanted to do, which is to travel.’

‘Hello, I'm M-L (@marielouisespp), a recent alumni of the MA Publishing Media (18/19) cohort. For the last 10 months, I've been working at Faber & Faber in the Publicity department as Communications Assistant which is basically me, livin' my best life. During lockdown I have still been working full-time from my little London apartment but in my spare time I have been enjoying an excess of French crime dramas (Walter Presents on Channel 4 - I'm obsessed), tuning into P.E with Joe daily (and still frantically typing in my name to the comments box in the hope of a shoutout sadly to no avail), spending all my money on supermarket flowers (peonies!!🌸) and frequently Googling 'dachshund puppies for sale near me'. I'm also reflecting on what an important and huge period of change we're going through in the publishing industry, especially from a publicity perspective. With all literary festivals and events either cancelled or turned virtual, I can't help but feel nostalgia for my first launch parties last summer, sweating in an overcrowded bookshop, sipping tepid white wine. I hope that the industry can navigate its way through this challenging time and come out stronger.’ #isolationchronicles #lockdowndiary #faberandfaber #pewithjoe #Londonlife #peonies #oxfordlife #WalterPresents #oxfordpublishing #oicp #mastersprogramme #media #journalism #publishing #staysafe #stayalert #stayhome #lockdown #bookstagram #bookblogger

The #isolationchronicles by your lecturer, Leander Reeves... ‘Reading: I have found reading for fun to have been almost impossible over these last few weeks. But I am slowly reading The Human by Neal Asher. I love hard sci-fi and it is really good for my brain and for the thinking I do on hyperreality. Watching: I’m struggling to watch anything even remotely serious or anything that produces feelings – I have needed to watch fun things. We religiously watch RuPaul’s Drag Race every year – and All Stars. Season 12 has just finished. It’s glorious. Schitts Creek is wonderful. The Moira Rose character is a beacon of hope for us all. Listening: Gregory Alan Isakov’s album This Empty Northern Hemisphere is soothing as I tinker away in the background. Plus a lot of John Finnemore and Sasha Velour’s Smoke and Mirrors song-list on Spotify. Thinking: This last couple of weeks I have dug in a pond and have been planning the bio diverse habitat around it – with UK native bog, marsh and water plants. Planning something like this is probably the best thing you can do for stress – it gives you something complex and different to think about. When I’m not thinking about water habitats – I have been trying to shape a definition of the source of the hyperreal for my PhD. It’s a tricky question that I have been working towards for some years. It puts me in direct conflict with Baudrillard and his timeline – which is always fun. But it also puts me in conflict with every theorist who confines hyperreality to a late twentieth century postmodern setting. Challenging accepted thought is always so exciting and nerve wracking! Of course, all this is made possible because I can sit in front of a pond and dream about remote space battles. Sometimes, in order to do some really difficult thinking, you have to take your brain on holiday first.’ #isolationchronicles #lockdowndiary #OxfordLife #oxfordpublishing #oicp #OxfordBrookesUniversity #universitylife #lecturersofinstagram #phd #seniorlecturer #hyperreality #Baudrillard #nealasher #thehuman #postmodern #media #journalism #publishing #staysafe #stayalert

‘Hi 👋🏻 I'm Joanne (@joannethecheshirecat) and I am an MA Publishing Media alumni (2018/19). Before the lockdown, I had finished my internship at @fairlightbooks (thanks to the course!) and started working there full-time as a Design and Production Assistant since October - this has been perfect for me to unleash my creativity. I consequently got a flat in Oxford and started living my new adult life! Of course when lockdown hit the UK I decided to be closer to my family and moved back to Leicestershire temporarily. Since then, I have been working from home and embracing the lush countryside by going on walks and taking my bike out for a spin. I have also been baking cakes (and fudge!) as well as writing hand-written 'lockdown cards' to my friends as a way of keeping in contact. This has now escalated to my kitchen being full of flowers and a shelf full of cards. 🌸 I have (of course) been going down my pile of books and have finally got round to reading Normal People by Sally Rooney, just in time for the BBC adaptation! My other project has been making my own photo albums to look back on memories before the pandemic. An amazing lockdown discovery was finding an 80 year old jigsaw of my late Grandad when he was a child and piecing it together with my Mum. 💠 In this crazy world its important to stay busy, but also to make time to reflect and relax, so a big thank you to @oxfordpublishing for all of the opportunities you have given me... ‘Hi, my name is Annabella @annabella97__ and I am a MA Publishing Media student at Oxford Brookes. Just before lockdown at the end of March, I returned home to be with my family in Northamptonshire. I have been missing Oxford a lot, but been going on lots of walks, baking in my spare time and video calling those that I cannot meet with in-person at the moment. I’ve also been writing and reading more, which I’m grateful for, so I hope you enjoy this poem that I wrote within the first two weeks of lockdown. I am also hoping to finally start a poetry account here on Instagram soon, as it’s been a goal of mine for a while! I’m looking forward to continuing to volunteer for @thestorymuseum and @guppypublishing throughout the summer, whilst tuning in to more OPuS and @_bookmachine webinars! Our very own Dr @janeepotter has been busy. Below is news of her latest project (words extracted from Brookes website - read the whole story online): “‘My teeth don't chew on shrapnel': an anthology of poetry by military veterans, that is free to download and share - head to Brookes website and search up the Veterans’ Poetry Workshop. @brookespoetry It features poetry written by eight workshop participants and associates: Jo Young, Tom Laaser, Claire Hughes, Noel Harrower, John Thampi, Jamie Broady, Andrew Fassett, and Maggs Vibo. The anthology also includes an introduction by Niall Munro, an explanation of the workshop process by Susie Campbell, an essay about women veteran writers by Jane Potter, and reflections on her research into the perceptions of veterans in the UK and the US by Rita Phillips.” * * #oxfordpublishing #poetryworkshop #drjanepotter #brookespoetrycentre #veteranspoetryworkshop #anthology #womenveteranwriters #reflectionsonresearch

‘Hi, I’m Jodie and I’m a third year student studying Publishing Media with English Lit. After a pretty abrupt end to third year, I decided to move home to London and spend lockdown with my family. ‘Hello! I’m Imogen, an MA Publishing student from Yorkshire. During lockdown I’ve been working on new books for @greenteethpress, an independent publisher I started in 2018. I wanted to showcase new and underrepresented authors, particularly those outside of London. We’ve published two anthologies of prose and poetry, Pondweed and Unhomely, alongside a debut poetry pamphlet by James Rance. ‘Hello, I’m Anna. I’m a first year undergrad studying Media, Journalism and Publishing. With the end of my first university year cut short, I found myself feeling quite lost. To help focus my restless mind, I decided to start a blog. I write column-style opinion pieces, social and cultural commentary, and reviews. ‘Hey, my name is Ugne (@uggnem) and I’m a first year BA Media, Journalism and Publishing student. So far I have no idea what I would like to do after my studies, however while doing an assignment for one of my modules I discovered that I quite enjoy creating book covers, so this might be a career area to look into. I’m living in Norway and staying in quarantine with my family. Mostly my days have been occupied with reading, catching up on assignments and watching lots of Netflix (I can’t imagine quarantine without it:D). This time in isolation has given me a chance to rediscover my love for drawing and photography as well as joining the baking club which seems to be popular these days. I’m also exploring my town and going on hikes, which are great activities to clear my head after staying inside for long periods of time. I’m really looking forward to (hopefully) going back to Oxford in September and seeing what the second year of uni brings!’ #isolationchronicles #lockdowndiary #norway #studentlife #oxfordpublishing #media #publishing #journalism #studentsofinstagram #undergraduate #oxfordlife #stayhome #stayalert #universitylife

Hi All.... I am Anggun, a Master’s Student in Publishing Media at Oxford Brookes University. After building my own business in publishing @gre.publishing over 9 years, I decided to expand my knowledge. Actually, there are several universities providing Master’s programmes in publishing in Europe, UK, North America, Australia and even in Southeast Asia. However, after reading the testimonials from its alumni on its website and hearing the Programme Director talk about the programme on YouTube, the MA Publishing Media @oxfordpublishing touched my heart deeply. The combination of great lecturers, who have a deep understanding of the publishing industry, and the wonderful academic life in Oxford has given me an unforgettable experience. Publishing Studies is a new subject in Indonesia. There are only two polytechnics which offer a diploma programme in publishing. If I am not mistaken, I am the first Indonesian taking the MA Publishing Media course at Brookes. So now I like to promote publishing studies in Indonesia for a young, creative generation and I am the speaker on student life in the UK for the Indonesian International Student Association. After finishing the MA, I want to continue to expand my publishing company. I am currently conducting inspiring talks on my company IG every weekend. But I also have a 14 month-old baby, and now I am back at home, we like to go out every morning and afternoon for daily exercise and walks near our home. #isolationchronicles #lockdowndiary #indonesia #studentlife #oxfordpublishing #OxfordBrookesUniversity #universitylife #studentsofinstagram #MAPublishingMedia #mastersprogramme #media #publishing #independentpublishing #youngpublisher #creative #nextgeneration #staysafe #stayalert
