Making sure your kids know that they belong ❤️ I haven’t posted about this yet, but on Friday afternoon, our nephew was hit by a car while crossing near the river. He was with eight other family members and camping right on the Nueces river, and He was just going to get some ice cream on the other side of the road, but suddenly life became very different. For the next few scary hours, he was life flighted to San Antonio’s level 1 Military Trauma center (we don’t know exactly why he was sent to the military hospital, but it turned out to be a blessing), and a team of doctors rushed to figure out the extent of his multiple injuries, most worrisome of them all was a skull fracture. In the meantime, the calls went immediately out to my husband’s family members, and literally EVERYBODY showed up, and really within about an hour of the helicopter landing at the hospital. Because we all had to stop to get clearance at the military checkpoint into the hospital, the MP there even made a comment to me about how fast and how many people had come for the emergency. Looking around the waiting room later that night it was amazing how clear that this is what a family does: everyone drops everything, shows up, and is in it for the long haul, no questions asked. And my nephew, when he finally regained consciousness on Saturday, the first thing he wanted was to see everyone. So you will hear me talk about the importance of having family photos on the walls of your home. Besides just being able to enjoy your family photos daily, it really does give kids a feeling of belonging and knowing that these are “their people” no matter what, when they struggle, or even when bullies in their lives make them feel less than. But in a time like this accident that we just went through this weekend, that same bond reveals itself and gives comfort to all the family members. And he is doing miraculously after such a scary accident!
